An Giang province on Vietnam’s southern border with Cambodia restored 65 Khmer pagodas at a cost of VND300 million ($18,714) ahead of the upcoming Chol Chnam Thmay, the Khmer New Year Festival.
A further VND50 million ($3,120) was also allocated to these pagodas to be used for the teaching of Pali, an ancient language derived from Sanskrit.
During the harvest festival on April 12-14, provincial officials will call on over 60 ethnic Khmer families in the area.
An Giang is home to over 86,000 Khmers, who account for 4 percent of the province’s population.
