A new website launched by the Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Saturday has caused a stir in the Cambodian local media as well as among top officials.
The website at the centre of the controversy, ilovethailand.org, claimed that parts of today's Cambodia were in fact Thai territories.
The website's claims make headlines in most major newspapers in Cambodia. Khmerization was the first site that has opened the debate on this controversial website when it received an email from Mr. Dith Nimol alerting the website's claims relating to Thai "lost territory".
Reaksmei Kampuchea newspaper picked up Khmerization's report. Then Khmer Sthapana, Deum Ampil and Khmer online website, everyday.com.kh, have all reported the Thai PM website's controversy extensively.
The major English daily, the Phnom Penh Post, reported that Cambodian officials are scurrying to investigate the claims. It quoted Mr. Phay Siphan, spokesman for Council of Ministers, as saying that "They (the Thais) are twisting the facts of history. It is completely exaggerated."
According to Phnom Penh Post, in 1794, Thailand - then known as Siam - annexed Siem Reap and Battambang provinces from the declining Khmer kingdom, but the territories were returned following a March 1907 treaty between Thailand and France.
And, according to historical records, other Khmer territories annexed by Thailand in the late 18th centuries include Kauk Khan (Sisaket), Surin, Sakeo, Nokor Reach (Korat) and many more provinces.

Cambodian territories during King Jayavarman VII in the 12th century extended north to China, west to Burma, South to Malaysia and east to Gulf of Tonkin near Hanoi. Thailand didn't exist at that time.

ReplyDeleteBear in mind that changes take place at all time,ie changes of economy where used to be bloc trades and now global economy, environmental changes with pollutions and degradation of land and fertility,massive increase of population...etc. So does history can be changed,for thai govt has tried as long as I am aware in my childhood. But when the changes become complex,then it will be complications to resolve.
Every cambodians know that there are changes to border AROUND cambodia.Obviously these border line changes become effective for our neighbors.
Why now? because of opportunity arise as there has been social breakdown,human resources elimination and dependent economy on international aids and most of all the induced corruption that has been denied for so long.Element of enforcement the corruption is public power abuses.
Accepting responsibility and accountability and changing in management will strenghten govt and CPP's image for its nationalism.

For legal grouds where evidences would be required by international court,cambodian govt should file a complaint to the court in hague for this distorsion of Thailand.

Easy resolution is that thais admit they are khmer decendent,and work around principles of khmer unity. Benefits are:
1) Maintain common culture
2)No concern of viet spreading.

In this case, I feel the Khmer PM Mr. Hun Sen is a better politician as the Thai PM Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva. Of course the Thai PM has a better personality and a great educational background.
