IMPRISONED opposition newspaper publisher Hang Chakra has written a letter of apology to Deputy Prime Minister Sok An, officials said.
Minister of Information and government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said he has delivered it to the deputy prime minister.
But since Hang Chakra, 55, has already been convicted of defamation, the letter alone doesn't guarantee the journalist's release, Khieu Kanharith said. "I delivered a letter to Excellency Sok An," he said. "How he will decide depends on him because he is the plaintiff."
Journalists who have been lobbying on Hang Chakra's behalf said they hoped the move would facilitate his release. "I hope he will be allowed to leave prison," said Touch Nora, president of the Cambodia Watch of Journalists Association.
Hang Chakra was convicted of defamation and publishing false information for a series of articles alleging corruption against officials under Sok An. He was sentenced to one year in prison and fined 9 million riels (US$2,187). The Court of Appeal rejected his case on August 11.

ReplyDeleteU R a Pro-CPPs, let me start by asking a question for u 2 to ransacking your neuronal for answer. Has you master Hun Sen stopped evicting Khmer Citizens living in CAMBODIA from their makeshifs/huts/homes in the name of public domain for the purpose of development?
A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE IS DANGEROUS! The WHOLE WORLD IS VERY CONSCIOUS ABOUT LIVING OR STRIVING TO BE SUSTAINABLE. I ask again, what does the CPP folks know about sustainability?
Illegal logging and clearing out the Rainforest in Cambodia isn't SMART to do. Building hydroelectric dams isn't a good idea 'cause the government isn't willing to take care of the citizens that are being displaced by infrastructures. Pumping sand into a lake isn't a SMART idea either, but I can't expect much from the CPP 'cause EDUCATION CREDENTIALS ARE VERY BOGUS.
A little knowledge is a DANGEROUS thing. What has the CPP been doing with DONORS' money that was supposed to improve the infrastructures of Khmer Society? I am talking about a Billion Dollar annually in the last 20 years given to CPP government.
Clean water, electricity, health, education, and et al ought to be improve by today's standard. But, I am there in Cambodia -- 1/1000th of 1% does get to the general public in Cambodia. The massive and chronic flooding ought to be solve by now if the government were to use the funding for the citizens. AND DON'T TELL ME THE CPPs ARE MAKING THE DIFFERENT FOR KHMER PEOPLE. IF SO WHICH KHMER: Khmer with $$$$$$$$$$, Khmer-Sok An, Khmer-Hok Lundy, Khmer-Hun Sen...
Boyz! I can go on describing what's wrong with the current Khmer government right now, enough to fill NYC phone book.
The Tourism Sector, especially the Siem Reab Province, the revenue generated are in the 300-600 million dollar annually. So much income generated, ironically Siem Reab Khmer people are very poor, neglected, abandoned, undereducated in DPI (dept. public instruction).
What progress can you tell the world that Hun Sen Regime actually or potentially advance Khmer Society into the 21st Century?
Pause. Contemplate my Rationale. KHMER PEOPLE DESERVED GOVERNMETNT THAT CAN MOVE THEM OUT OF KHMER ROUGE ERA, AND DESERVED TO LIVE WITHOUT FEAR OF PERSECUTION.

THERE ARE SO MUCH INFORMATION ABOUT THE TRUTH BEHIND THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT FAILURE ON HER POPULATION AS A WHOLE. THE CPP IS HIDING BEHIND THE IDEAS OF DEVELOPMENT, SOCIAL ORDER, THE RULE OF LAWS, AND IMPROVEMENT OF SOCIETY IN CAMBODIA IN THE LAST 20 OR SO YEARS.
CPPs are masking the TRUTH. I am part of the volunteer group, giving up my Summer break to help digging Water Well in Pursat for the rural impoverish Khmers. THE CPP STATES IT'S TOO COSTLY TO HAVE WATER WELL FOR THE LOCALS. BUT EVERY CPPs dudes has access to clean water. How hypocritical is that to have your own drink polluted water and poison by the toxins, while the CPPs have way to access clean water.
Yes, AngkarMan, you would not UNDERSTAND 'CAUSE YOU WERE BORN WITH THE DEATH IN YOUR MIND -- KILLING MASS POPULATION IS RIGHT FOR YOU. You have blood on you hands. We're are simple people -- without the NGOs' help. We would never realized what clean water is like. This is just one problem that CPPs chronically created and oppressed people in Cambodia.
You are Khmer Rouge. You would NOT Understand the MORAL PRINCIPLES, COMPASSION, ETHIC, ETC.
