Dozens families evicted in Cambodia

Saturday, October 10, 2009
The News (Pakistan)

PHNOM PENH: Authorities in Cambodia have evicted around 76 families and destroyed their homes in the country's northwest, a rights group said Saturday.

The villagers were forced to move when their homes in Oddar Meanchey province were bulldozed and set on fire Friday, local human rights group Licadho said.

Police, however, said they were only removing the temporary shelters of people illegally settling on a plantation belonging to a sugar company.

"All those families are now staying in a pagoda, but they refused to accept the offers of land exchange by the company," said Srey Naren from Licadho.

The Cambodian government has faced criticism for forced evictions carried out by the army and police throughout the country, which have increased as land prices have risen over the past few years.

Last year over 20,000 people were reported affected by forced evictions from their homes in the Southeast Asian country, according to rights group Amnesty International.

This is my comment in response to 5:24PM in a previous article:

    5:24PM,
Hun Sen is not a strong man as you claim. How can a man be strong if he has 4,000 bodyguards to protect him? And in addition there are thousands of armed Yuons mixing with his guards. What are they for? Hun Sen without Yuons and his own guards is a dandruffed dumb and scary dog.

KHmer people know that they cannot get anything good from this government but maltreament and oppression. A ruler with no compassion, sympathy, and kindness will never make his people happy.

"In Buddhism, we are taught not only to love, but our love need to arise from a mind of serenity, purity, and equality. We call this kind of love compassion. Compassion is rational love. We also need to use true wisdom. Wisdom is the true mind and emotion is the illusory mind. Love that arises from emotions will change while love arises from wisdom will never change." Does your Hun Sen possess the slightest bit of these qualities? Perhaps none. In contrast, he possesses tons of hatred, revenge, arrogance, ignorance, and cockiness which forms as a big mold of immorality inside him.

Government (gov't) needs to build multiple flats, each flat may contain e.g. up to 3 levels/ground floor for garage purposes and then level 2=4*4bedrooms per unit and so as level 3 or town houses which is much more modern nowadays. Total of families who may live in a flat or the town houses would be 8. In Aust, properties that belongs to gov't and rent it out to poor people, we called it "gov't housing or housing commission". In doing so, is to avoid having or seeing homelessness along the street or parking lots etc. Plus it is the image of the country, the quality of life as well as equality with both rich and poor can have a home to live in. In addition, it is part of a gov't revenue as well, e.g. gov't can collect these renting monies and use it for other purposes such as of community building development. So, it is very good if gov’t can provide these supports to meet people’s need. Let say each suburb there will 10 flats (8families*10flats=80 families out of the slum), by doing this, it will help to reduce the image of poverty in our society as a whole. On the other hand, when gov’t gives peace to people, it will be likewise, peace will come to the gov’t. Aust

This my comment in response to dumb Aust in previous article:

No Khmers want to be the enemy of his/her country, where they were born, you bonehead 11:57AM, but decent Khmers overseas, excluding you, won't allow a dictator to suppress Khmers living inside of the country any further. Hus Sen is the enemy of Khmer people, because, from the start, he didn't get his power by Khmer people's votes, but by being installed in power by Yuons in the exchange of a big concession he made to Yuon, the concession that benefits only Hun Sen, his families, and his cronies, but hurts and harms Khmer people for many generations to come.

8:30PM yes you are right no khmer want to be the enemy of his/her country, but you were generalising us by say "Khmer overseas don't appoved of Hun sen gov't" which is not true, all I'm saying is we khmer overseas are not bias. So, I believe you must be the mole from other race who like to stir you people lives. Becareful or bad "karma" will come your way", No gov't is perfect but you have to know how to say things. Don't use such a language to affect other people like that! Stop using "We Khmer overseas". So, get out of this site if you are a mole.
