Cambodian official warns UN-backed tribunal as country marks overthrow of Khmer Rouge

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia - A Cambodian official warned a U.N.-backed genocide tribunal on Thursday not to interfere in the country's internal affairs as the Southeast Asian nation marked the overthrow of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime 31 years ago.

Speaking to some 7,000 supporters, Chea Sim, president of the ruling Cambodian People's Party, said it would not allow the court to destroy the country's peace and national reconciliation. He said the tribunal must try only the most senior Khmer Rouge leaders.

The ultra-communist Khmer Rouge regime was overthrown by invading Vietnamese forces on Jan. 7, 1979.

The tribunal is seeking justice for an estimated 1.7 million people who died from execution, overwork, disease and malnutrition as a result of the group's policies during its 1975-79 rule.

The tribunal, which includes both foreign and Cambodian lawyers, has charged five senior Khmer Rouge leaders with war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

"We oppose attempts to use the chamber for ill intentions which would have an impact on peace, national reconciliation and development, which have been our hard-won achievements," Chea Sim, who is also senate president, said in a speech at party headquarters in Phnom Penh.

Some foreign prosecutors have attempted to bring more former Khmer Rouge members before the tribunal, but the government of Prime Minister Hun Sen has so far blocked such moves.

Hun Sen and a number of other senior government leaders held positions in the Khmer Rouge, and China, now Cambodia's No. 1 ally, backed the Khmer Rouge regime.

Casting a wider net might ignite tensions and problems for Hun Sen's government and offend the Chinese.

The tribunal tried its first defendant, prison chief Kaing Guek Eav, last year on charges of crimes against humanity, war crimes, murder and torture.

Kaing Guek Eav, also known as Duch, commanded S-21 prison in Phnom Penh, where up to 16,000 people were tortured and taken away to be killed. A verdict is expected early this year, and he faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment if found guilty. Cambodia has no death penalty.

Ah sva - Don't you know that your warning can be alleged as interferring with the court process? Let them do their job otherwise Khmer won't get justice.

Oh come on Mr. Chea Sim be a good sport and face the music....
Cambodia is already at peace and there is no more KR, but only Vietnamese and CPP government with former Khmer Rouge background that hold power and GUNs today.

So if UN can progress with prosecuting all of the KR officials and former KR like Mr. Chea Sim, Hun Sen, Heng Samrin, Hor Num Hong. THIS WILL BE THE FINAL RECONCILATION and true peace and Justice to the people of Cambodia and the victims of the Khmer Rouge and Vietnam Rouge Leaders (K5).

Promise once UN prosecuted them all Cambodia will celebrate, why would any body beside the above CPP official want to go to war? or create civil war, these people who talk about it are the one to is the ROOT CAUSE if Camboida have war...as no one else held that power in Cambodia today.

Chea Sim, Heng Samrin and Hun Sen know that they are on the short list of the U.N.-backed genocide tribunal, that's why they don't want the courts to dig deep.
They don't want the skeletons in their closet to come out!
Khmer people will only be satisfied when Chea Sim, Heng Samrin, Hun Sen and the Vietnamese government are put on trial by the U.N. Tribunal and held accountable for the murder of 1.7 million people. They must pay for their actions.
You were part of the atrocities, just because you walked away and claimed disassociation, does not mean that you are not guilty of the crime.

  7. It is shamed indeed that this tribunal reserves its trial just for Cambodia and its people and not countries who involved in the war.

Richard Nixon is now RIP and buried with hounor with other good former Presidents but his advisor Henry Kissenger is well alive and has the mental capacity to face some music for his advices to "It is Nixon pure doctrine for Cambodia to help themselves".

Don't you Cambodian-American and Lon Nol supporters agree with that?

People, don't we know who killed most people? To trust in the UN is to trust in a broken staff. The UN is the most guilty enity on earth.

If the UN really cares they would deal with Vietnam encroachment into Cambodia and not throw their power into the justice system in what happen during the Khmer Rouge Era.

The UN is a false Messiah to save the world. Get to know the dark side of the UN. They have no interest in saving Cambodia and its people only feigning to help but in reality they are wolves in sheep's clothing.

UN is like Communism, if it is not that. If you think KR is bad or CPP, watch out for the UN when they start to control the whole world system. Only the ELITE Rule Supreme. And you will ask: Where is the PEACE that the UN been promising?
