Cambodian opposition parties support taking border issues with Thailand to international community

Source: DAP News

Cambodian opposition parties have come out in support of Prime Minister Hun Sen's speech hinting that Cambodia will take border issues with Thailand to the international stage, reports Deum Ampil.

On 9th February, in a speech in during an inauguration of a military headquarter in O'Svay village in Oddar Meanchey province, Prime Minister Hun Sen said he will take the border dispute at Preah Vihear and ta Moan Thom temple to the International Court of Justice in The Hague and to the UN Security Council.

Mr. Hun Sen said the border issues with Thailand cannot resolve through bilateral talks as numerous previous talks resulted in nothing. He said If Thailand and Cambodia cannot resolve the issues through talks, Cambodia must take the issues to the UN Security Council.

Mr. Yem Ponharith, Secretary General of the Human Rights Party, said this is the best stance that won't be a time wasting and that can avoid wars.

The Sam Rainsy Party had expressed its full support of taking the border problems with Thailand to the International Court of Justice and to UN Security Council.

Mr. Ho Vann (pictured), an MP from the Sam Rainsy Party, said taking the issue to the international stage is the best option. He also proposes that the government takes the same measures in regards to border issues with all Cambodia's neighbours.

48 YEARS AFTER THE ICJ VERDICT, A KHMER-THAI LOVE-HATE RELATIONSHIP
    ๔๘ ปีหลังจากคดีศาลโลก, ความสัมพันธ์รัก-เกลียดระหว่าง เขมร-ไทย

Forty-eight years after the International Court of Justice rendered its decision regarding Preah Vihear Temple on June 15, 1962, Thailand continues to blindly disobey the world court's decision. The dispute was started when Field Marshal Sarit of Thailand ordered troops to occupy Preah Vihear temple and the adjacent areas some 50 years after the temple became under Cambodia's sovereignty under Franco-Siamese treaty of 1904-07. Preah Vihear is considered sacred to the Khmers, second only to Angkor Wat because of its unsual breathtaking site on top of cliff. The ongoing conflict is a political pawn used by the Abhisit government to stir Thai nationalism in order to secure his undemocratic PM seat. The same repeating situation has now passed on to other Khmer temples of Prasat Ta Moan and Ta Krabey, with Thai troops illegally occupying Khmer Temples. If necessary, Cambodia may have to go back to the world court once again over these temples. Instead of focussing on its internal problems and fostering good neighbourly friendship, the Thai government choses a dangerous hostile path with its neighbours. It fought a brief border dispute war with Laos back in 1987-88 and now with Cambodia. How can such a country expects others to respect and obey it's own law and be in good terms when Thailand itself does not even respect international law and continues to be arrogant and uncivilized toward its neighbours.

The ICJ decision of 1962 was clear in black and white. The Thai government may be able to fool its citizen regarding the verdict, but it can never fool the world. Let's review the decision once again:

"In its Judgment on the merits the Court, by nine votes to three, found that the Temple of Preah Vihear was situated in territory under the sovereignty of Cambodia and, in consequence, that Thailand was under an obligation to withdraw any military or police forces, or other guards or keepers, stationed by her at the Temple, or in its vicinity on Cambodian territory."

48 YEARS AFTER THE ICJ VERDICT, A KHMER-THAI LOVE-HATE RELATIONSHIP
    ๔๘ ปีหลังจากคดีศาลโลก, ความสัมพันธ์รัก-เกลียดระหว่าง เขมร-ไทย

For over eight hundred years, Thailand has an immense awe and insatiable appetite for anything Khmer. Over 40% of its current language contains Khmer words, as seen in common terms like (walk-เดิน, birth-กำเนิด, nose-จมูก, grandny-ยาย, comrade-สหาย, music-เพลง, soldier-ทหาร, road-ถนน, etc.). Its culture is a mirror image of Khmer. Many Thai Kings and Queens over hundreds of years had Khmer blood, not to mention its people, especially those in the north-eastern provinces. The inventor of the Thai writing system was King Ram Kamhaeng (1239-1298). He was a at least half Khmer. He devised 44 Thai scripts based on lower case Khmer alphabets. The Thai numerals are identical to Khmer. The royal traditions and royal language between the two kingdoms are almost identical. An interesting note to this is that Princess Bejaratana Rajasuda, 84, (the only daughter of His Majesty King Vajiravudh, Rama VI) is first cousin of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and third cousin with former King Norodom Sihanouk. Khuang Abhaiwong who was of Khmer descent served three terms as Thai prime minister (1944–45, 1946, 1947–48). The relationship of Thailand and Cambodia is very unique. One can say that it is a love/hate relationship. With so much similarity like kinship, it would be nice if we all can live in fraternal peace and harmony. The recent Thaksin appointment as an advisor to the royal government of Cambodia should be a symbolic solidarity of friendship between the two countries, and should not be regarded as negative thing as publicized by the Abhisit government. It was not something new that Cambodia had appointed foreign advisors. Lee Myung-Bak was also an economic advisor of Cambodia before he was elected president of South Korea. Thaksin had mentioned that if Cambodia is more prosperous, wouldn't it be also good for Thai exported goods? And this would be a step toward the ASEAN Economic Community of 2015. With all said, maybe Mr. Abhisit should consider cooling off and withdraw all troops from Khmer territory per ICJ verdict of 1962 before the war of words get out of hand and burst into a full-scale war. Ignorance of the law and greediness are not the way to go if we are to live in peace and prosperity for many generations to come.

If you want to fight cancer, you fight it in the early stage of its progress, not when the cancer has spread all over your body.

This is analogous with the Khmer-Thai border conflict.

The Cambodian government should have taken this issue in its early stage in July 15th, 2008, not just now.

It would be extremely difficult to manage all at once for the Cambodian government to handle, with possibly the loss of lives down the road.

Treat illnesses like those of political issues in the same manner. This is how you remain healthy.

It's so annoying to hear these issues over and over again in Southeast Asia, especially in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar. Get a life! Move on!

To say that Google does not guarantee the accuracy of its map content is totally irresponsible. If they are international law abiding company, they should have at least follow the legal UN map of Cambodia, not a Thai unilateral map drawn up by Thailand. By using inaccurate map shows that they are taking sides. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse. Correction must be made immediately if Google is an honest company.

As far as the Thai accomplice, they are wrong if they think that they can use google map for their advantage in future land claims over Cambodia. We Khmer did it once in 1962 and we will continue to do it again when necessary to protect our beloved homeland from naked aggression.

Here is a site of Google Cambodia map: (Please zoom [+] to see the following areas)

    http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=11.55,104.916667&spn=10,10&t=h&q=11.55,104.916667

    NOTES:

    1. Pay special attention to Prasat Preah Vihear area (4.6 km2 Khmer land is completely in the Thai side, not reflecting the world court decision on June 15, 1962).

    2. Poipet area (Cambodian visa office, Angkor Wat entry gate and some casinos are now shown in the Thai side, the actual border is at the bridge and O'Chrov river near Rong Gleua market).

    3. Prasat Ta moan area (showing at least 2 temples of the 3 temple-complex on the Thai side).

    4. Kampot/Takeo-Vietnam border at Prek Krobao area (border now is west of the canal, which used to be the canal itself).

Other areas will be examined as well.

Based on these maps, it is undoubtedly that the Thai governement conspired with Google to have the incorrect online map in Thailand's favor. The Royal Government of Cambodia must demand correction per the internationally recognized map of Cambodia from Google. The Thai government should be condemned by the world community for its dishonesty and ill-will intention of aggression over Cambodian land.

  7. Khmer Surin, I am so excited reading your comment... A real decedent of Khmer warriors is speaking out (I'd like to remind that historically Khmer upper land were Suryavong (family of the Sun)who were great warriors. And Khmer lower land were Somavong(family of the moon)who were very good at agriculture, economy. Whenever this two Khmer families are together, the great Khmer is glorious and prosperous.)
