Border tensions died down yesterday but the war of words flared up with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen reciting a curse on Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva for his comments on disputed territory.
Thai security forces had been put on alert over the weekend as Hun Sen toured the border near overlapping areas including the Preah Vihear Temple.
The PM arrived in the vicinity of Ta Muen Thom Temple but did not visit the ruins.
Colonel Thanet Wongcha-um, chief of staff of the Suranaree Task Force, which oversees the area, said Thai authorities on the ground informed Hun Sen's advance team the situation was not safe due to the presence of yellow-shirt protesters.
Before leaving the area, Hun Sen presided over the inauguration of Ta Moan village in Oddar Meanchey province, some five to six kilometres away from the temple, Thanet said. Thai troops retreated after his departure, he said.
During the opening ceremony, Hun Sen launched a verbal attack on Abhisit.
Abhisit said on Sunday that Hun Sen's visit to Preah Vihear would help Thailand claim possession of the area surrounding the temple.
Hun Sen visited the temple on Saturday and accused Thai troops of invading Cambodia. Abhisit said later that day that Hun Sen's accusation meant the Cambodian leader accepted Thai ownership.
Hun Sen put a curse on Abhisit.
"If you don't tell the truth about Thai troops invading Cambodia, let magic objects break your neck, may you be shot, be hit by a car, may you be shocked by electricity or [may you be shot] by misfired guns."
"Will Abhisit swear on having all his family members killed and having them [perish] in a plane crash, if [he still claims] that Thai troops did not invade Cambodia?" Hun Sen was quoted as saying by Cambodian website Deum Ampil News.
The International Court of Justice ruled in 1962 that Preah Vihear is located in territory under the sovereignty of Cambodia. Abhisit argued that the court was referring only to the stone remains but the area adjacent to the temple belongs to Thailand.
He said again yesterday that Thailand would never surrender any of its territory.
Relations with Cambodia turned sour after Abhisit took power due to his stance against Cambodia over the Preah Vihear issue.
Hun Sen criticised Abhisit for supporting the yellow-shirt movement, which helped set the stage for the military coup in 2006 and seized Suvarnabhumi Airport in 2008, paving the way for Abhisit to assume power.
Chavanond Intarakomalyasut, secretary to the foreign minister, said Thailand regretted learning about Hun Sen's harsh statement.
Such an outburst would undermine attempts to restore diplomatic relations, he said.

In case of Prasat Ta Moan Thom, this is the opportunity for Samdech Hun Sen to take this case to the ICJ again as Samdech Norodom Sihanouk once did with Prasat Preah Vihear in 1962.
ReplyDeleteH.E. Hor Nam Hong, Sok An and Cambodian legal experts must start and prepare on the legal process immediately. We can still use the Annex I map (Franco-Siamese map) for this case.
What is KI-Media trying to do with their retitling? Why are they sided with the PAD THAI, the very group of people who is working hard to undermine our progresses among the world community? I wish SRP and KI-MEDIA would stop aligning with the people... It is very disappointing to see siding with Thailand. They score big when they fight with Vietnam but they lose when they side with Thailand. KI-Media has confused its supporters for sure. I share SRP values but I don't share their style of politicking.

Making fun of Hun Sen and his incompetent CPP does not automatically translate to supporting Thai. I have seen KI blasts Thai and Viet. KI is real Khmer Interest website.

ReplyDeleteIf you are a true khmer you must not side with Siem-Thailand. The Siems are the real invaders. They took a lot of our land but they still want this tiny 4.6sqkm in the viscinity of our Preah Vihear Temple.
We, Cambodians must unite in the Cambodia-Thailand border row in order to gain our sovereignty over this piece of Land which is a slope and our road towards the Temple. Vat Keo Sekha Reshvara Kiri is a Khmer Buddhist Temple which bears the name in Khmer script and why those stupid Siems claimed that is belonged to them.
We must not curse our leaders, army, police and Khmer people who are trying hard to protect our Land which is very precious to us.
The Siems-Thais never stop to gain Land from us. They do very bad action against our people since the 14th century up to now. In the invasion of Cambodia in 1350, in 1385, in Longvek era by the Siameses they killed people, destroyed or took away our gold statues, pure gold and silver and other precious objects to build their nation. They took also the sacred books-sastras and killed our gurus and intellectuals. That is why we are down from a Khmer Empire in Southeast Asia to a poor country.
Please be alerted for this critical situation. We must not blame each other for some minor mistake. We must face the common enemy-the Siems-Thais.

Mr. Ly, If you are true Khmer you should not just comdemned Thai alone and is silent about the Viets as the latter are not just contemplating taking part of Cambodia like Siam but they took over the whole country now.
