It is now well known that democracy works in Cambodia just so long as its prime minister continues winning elections, whatever the inclinations of voters may be. Fresh from his latest victory in 2008, Hun Sen does not have to worry too much about the leader of the main opposition party, Sam Rainsy. Rainsy is in France, a good place to be because he's been sentenced to two years in prison for "racial incitement and destroying demarcation posts on the border with Vietnam." It seems that last October Rainsy joined local villagers in Svay Rieng's Chantrea district in pulling up six temporary markers placed in the villagers' rice fields by Vietnamese officials. Hun Sen, of course, was put in power in 1985 by Hanoi after Vietnamese forces invaded Cambodia to push out the Khmer Rouge. He is often called "Hanoi's stooge" by opponents, but not to his face.
