Op-Ed by Khmer Borann
To ordinary Khmers, the word “Yuon” is referred to the people who live in Vietnam and speak Vietnamese. Why Khmer people call the people who live in Vietnam “Yuon” or “Vietnamese”? Vietnam or Vietnamese just recently appeared in the world and in Khmer language. Before that, Khmers had not seen the word “Vietnam or Vietnamese” in Khmer language. That’s why even though after the word “Vietnam or Vietnamese” appeared in some European languages, Khmer people still use both “Yuon” and “Vietnamese” to call the people who live in Vietnam. For Khmers the word “Yuon” has no any pejorative connotation. Unfortunately, some foreigners and anti-Khmer elements are arguing senselessly that the word “Yuon” has pejorative connotation.
To me, I think those people not only are campaigning for their political agenda but also are trying to destroy Khmer language. Do those people know how the Vietnamese call countries and people in the world? Most countries in Asia have their own words to call things and counties. Khmers call France “Barang” and call Burma “Phou mea”. The Russian call China “Kitai” (Китай), while the Chinese call Cambodia “Chien pu chai” (柬埔寨). Do these words contain racial connotation?

ReplyDeleteThe word Vietnam is just appeared after 1979 (after Youn occupied Khmer). Before that time we Khmer called only YOUN. We are Khmer blood ,we used our language what we have used, if foreigners vorbidden us to use, those are Khmer foe. We were under France 90 yeras (1863- 1953), but France had no enfluence to vorbidden us, Now a couple of foreigners wanted to stop Khmer brothers and sisters call "YOUN" ! You are dreaming my friend.

ReplyDeleteyuons can also vote to ban Khmer language as national language while the users become minority in number. They can vote yuon language instead. That may take sometime for yuons to overcome but take example of Champa. It took yuons more than 5 centuries to complete swallowing Champa kingdom by maintaining yuon puppet regime to kill Champa people one against another. By manipulation Khmer rouge to lead genocide against Khmer following K5 and Hun sen facçad democratic process, yuon expansionist and genocidal policy in Cambodia meet a big success. You guys may cant understand by yuons did already prepared post hun sen and so on.

Before the KR regime, the word Youn was normal and neutral, but after the Khmer Rouge regime, the word Youn became the word for hatred and racist toward the Vietnamese, and thus people who live in Cambodia is very conscious and careful when using the word Youn.

Yeah I think the KR made the word Youn bad. They call them Ah Kmang Youn, so when the Vietnamese heard this word Youn now, they think of how the KR hatred toward the Vietnamese people, so after 1979, Cambodian government never call the Vietnamese Youn any more because they don't want to project the hatred and racist image left by the KR.

So instead of learning the language and custom to fit with their adopted nations they form their own clique and group and dare anyone to challenge them. They will not use Khmer language in Cambodia for this very reason.
