Tension on border ahead of Hun Sen, PAD visits

February 6, 2010
The Nation

Despite former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra denying that he had accompanied Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on a visit to disputed border areas this weekend, anxiety is looming in Thailand over its implications for the domestic political situation.

Thaksin said in his Twitter message that he is still in Dubai and would not accompany Hun Sen to visit the disputed areas near Preah Vihear Temple. He blasted Veera Somkwamkid, the leader of the nationalist People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), who had floated the news earlier.

"Don't you stop lying? I'm in Dubai which is seven hours from Cambodia by flight. How can you imagine I would go there, nonsense," he said.

Veera said he would take his PAD followers to protest against Hun Sen at Preah Vihear as the visit might violate Thai sovereignty over the territory. He said Hun Sen's visit with Thaksin would mount tensions in Thailand's politics as the court would issue a verdict in Thaksin's assets case later this month.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsubhan urged Veera not to make the problem more complicated. He said the government and concerned officials should be allowed to handle the situation.

Veera led the PAD to clash with local residents in Si Sa Ket's Kanthalalak district twice in 2008 and 2009 in protest against Preah Vihear's inscription as a World Heritage Site, which disturbed local people.

Suthep said Hun Sen's visit would not create any tensions in the border areas as the two countries have a protocol for welcoming each other on border visits. The government has assigned Si Sa Ket provincial governor and commander of Second Army Region to welcome the Cambodian prime minister.

Cambodia also follows the same protocol and assigned senior officials to welcome Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya when he visited the disputed areas near the Preah Vihear last year.

Hun Sen would visit several disputed areas along the border with Thailand from today until Monday, including the areas near Preah Vihear, Chong Bok and Ta Moan Thom.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva called a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) late on Thursday night to discuss security matters, including Hun Sen's border visit.

Senior officials attending the meeting concluded that it was just a routine visit by Hun Sen and the government should not overreact, a source at the meeting said.

Second Army Region Lt-General Veevarith Chornsamrit said he had contacted his Cambodian counterpart Chea Dara to discuss the arrangements for Hun Sen's visit.

Hun Sen would preside over the opening ceremony of a village in Preah Vihear province before a visit to Cambodian troops stationed in the nearby areas, he said.

The border visit was a normal practice and would not raise any tensions in the disputed areas, the commander said. He also added that the visit would have no implications on Thailand's sovereignty.

The Pra Viharn National Park, a gate to the Preah Vihear from the Thai side, was closed yesterday as military beefed up security to prevent the possibility of violence if PAD protesters and local residents clashed.

Thailand and Cambodia downgraded relations after Hun Sen appointed Thaksin as his adviser. The ruling Democrat Party spokesman Buranat Samuttara quoted Khmer Intelligence website that Thaksin had been given Cambodian citizenship since March 2009. No other source confirmed the report but Abhisit said Thaksin should forgo his Thai citizenship if he really is a Cambodian national.

  1. Guess..! is he going or not?

Now Siem gave a yellow signal...if Hun Sen wish to visit 4.6 km2..cambodia government need to inform than Siem will send its official to welcome.

If Cambodia does not inform, what is going on?

I wish Hun Sen goes... doesn't matter what...

If the turmoil continues- which seems likely –the country could become ungovernable, which it was close to becoming when PAD launched its campaigns against Abhisit’s two, pro- Thaksin predecessors, Somchai and Samak Sundaravej. It remains to be seen if the “Red Shirts” can muster similar mob support against his new government, which it has pledged to do. If it does, 2009 could be a watershed in modern Thai history. The relative peace, stability and prosperity that it’s enjoyed for decades are in jeopardy and gravely dangerous. And that does not augur well for Southeast Asia as a whole.

I certainly hope that Hun Sen's plan to visit Preah Vihear temple is his own desire, and not from the Hanoi regime. The Hanoi regime can make this call on Hun Sen to visit Khmer-Thai borders just to simply divert the Khmers' attention toward Siams rather to Yuons' encroachments.

If Hun Sen does this on his own initiatives then he is worth a leader, but if on the Hanoi regime's call then all Khmers are being fooled the Hun Sen/the Hanoi regime manipulations again!

HUN SEN will reclaim all the lost provinces back from Thailand. This comment was told by one of the astrologist or fortune teller in Phnom Penh. He wants to form the Khmer Empire back to its glory.

Thai wants HUN SEN to ask them to visit the place (4.6km2). But this lands is belong to Cambodia and HUN SEN doesn't need to ask Thai to go in.

If HUN SEN ask the Thai to visit that place that's mean the lands belong to Thai.

So don't ask them because the lands belong to Cambodia.

I heard people want to organize an organization represent the Khmerrouge Victimes!

One small purpose that sound so loud is about getting compansation as a group or and small token to organize a religion ceremony!

That sound so sad and scary to me!

Today Cambodia people kind of thinking that money can solve anything from get away from raping to muder, to accid attack!

Do we want to send a maasage that what Khmerrouge Victimes want is not justice and thruth but money? Money is more iportant than justice and life?

Mr. Chom Mey the Self called KhmerRouge Victime Who Only Dared to Loook At Duch in Eyes to Eyes, preferes some money and 50% justice!

    What is 50% justice ?

Justice for the Camodian now (Since we all victimes) is the thruth of what happening! Since real thruth could never be found or not only just one thruth! we want to hear the lawyers crose exame of who saw or involve with the crime!Specially the higher
    rank!

We want this process of justice to teach the next generation of how not to let the crime to be happening against from the point of view of the King down to a poor hadicape citizen!

We want notthing more thant gathering as many thruth as posible. NO money nor imprison any body! But what was wrong who did wrong, and how was wrong!

So the whole country or may be the whole world can create a system that prevent the crime of genocide to happen again any time any where else!

No MONEY for the wrong reason please! our country is corrupted to the core! They are selling justice for money and thing that for peace and forgiveness!

My relative lives can not be replaced by any money! But the thruths that help prevent the evil to strike again any where on earth!!

    Dear KI,

Here is my response I'd like to send to PPP editors. Can you post it on you blog, and send a copy to PPP? Thanks,

    *********************
The recent characterization of the word “YOUN” by PP Post (foreign) editors is arguably absurd and provocative. It is outrageous that some Westerners think they have the rights to go around and impose their views on different parts of the world without any respects for the local histories, cultures and traditions. That kind of attitude is one of the main reasons why we still have so many conflicts and violence in the world.

That being said, the word “YUON” was originally introduced, without passion or prejudice, as a reference to the ethnic group living in the Northern part of what is presently known as Vietnam. In the present days though, particularly after the 1979 invasion, Vietnam has fallaciously publicized or campaigned that word, which has been in use for hundreds of years, as racist, derogatory or pejorative. For Khmer people, such campaign shows once again Vietnamese’s blatant attempt at deception to rewrite its dark history, and to cast aggressors as victims and vice versa.

Historically, “yuon” ethnic had repeatedly exploited Khmer’s compassion, kindness, generosity, and later weakness, to absorb Khmer’s land and assimilate Khmer’s culture and tradition. Some of the methods they used to assimilate Khmers were among the most cruel and barbaric in human history. Till the present days, these Yuons continue to inflict extreme suffering on Khmer people, and I would challenge all editors of PP Post to visit or live with Khmer Krom people to discover the trust themselves.

Yuons know fully well that Khmers would never forgive and trust them again because of the historical losses and sufferings. So they are doing everything they can to erase that dark history from Khmers’ memory. One way to achieve that goal is to eliminate the word “Yuon” from Khmer language because they (Yuons) see that word as a bitter reminder to all Khmers of the deceptions, coercions, crimes and atrocity committed by Yuon ethnic to Khmer people. By forcing Khmers to call them Vietnamese, they hope Khmers younger and future generations will not remember the dark history. They are wrong! As our ancestors had done in the past, we will resist them and tell the history to our children and grand children as it happened.

So why is it so important to Vietnam that current and future Khmer generations are not reminded or told of the dark history between Khmers and Yuons? To some foreigners, it has the appearance of a normal way to leave the past behind and embrace a new world. But to Khmer people who have been exposed to Vietnam’s ambitions and aggressions for hundreds of years, it is just another yuons’ attempt to fulfill Ho Chi Minh’s dream of annexing the remaining Khmer territory.

    Undeterred Nationalist

PS: I am writing a song and hope to share with all of you once completed. Here is an excerpt:

“ KHMER EUY SAUM NEAK KOM PLIX THA
POUK YUON REOSIA TAING PI SAVADA PROHA CHIET YEONG”

    To Mr. 8:57am

You said that the opposition party should not say bad things against the Royal Government of Cambodia because it is elected by the majority and doing so is regarded as treason. You also mentioned that we should allow the court to decide and then forward it the national assembly (referring to the recent border encroachment by Vietnam).

I would like to say that the elected Royal Government of Cambodia has a duty to protect its sovereignty and the welfare of its citizens. Instead, our PM choses to remain silent and condemn Mr. Sam Rainsy and our innocent farmers to jail. If this were the US, the commander in chief would not be in office...the congress and constitution will bring him down immediately. In case of Cambodia, our PM choses to please the enemy (which is his boss). The evidence is clear as shown by Mr. Sam Rainsy about the encroachment by our neighbor and the court still sentence Mr. Sam Rainsy and our innocent farmers. Is our Samdech Hun Sen Khmer or is he 'Yuon'? The Cambodian national assembly and senate should work for the interests of Cambodia...if they do not...they should be disolved and call for a new election.
