Chea Dara's non-stop boasting

Chea Dara

RCAF general extolls army’s role at border

ROYAL Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) Deputy Commander in Chief Chea Dara has again extolled the military’s prowess in its border standoff with Thai forces, and said that tensions nearly boiled over in February when Prime Minister Hun Sen paid a visit to disputed Preah Vihear temple.

“Thai soldiers always harassed us a lot, especially during Samdech [Hun Sen]’s visit to Preah Vihear,” Chea Dara told an audience of municipal officials at City Hall on Thursday. “They tried to harass us at every place Samdech [Hun Sen] was visiting.”

Chea Dara said he told Thai commanders to keep their distance and at certain points threatened to attack them.

“Samdech [Hun Sen] can go anywhere in Cambodian territory. You have no right to complain and to put conditions on his trip,” he said.

“I warned Thai military commanders [that] if they disagreed, I was ready to attack. If I could not solve this, my rank would disappear from my shoulder, but before I lose it I would attack you first.”

In recent speeches, Chea Dara has declared “victory” for Cambodia in its dispute with Thailand. He has also said that Cambodian troops have killed 88 Thai troops since tensions erupted after the listing of Preah Vihear temple as a UNESCO World Heritage site in July 2008.

On Thursday, Chea Dara struck a more conciliatory note, saying that Thai government officials had been friendly in welcoming Prime Minister Hun Sen to the country during last week’s Mekong River Commission summit in Hua Hin.

Ket Siviny, a City Hall official who attended the speech, said it was good to receive news about the situation at the border.

“All attendants were very keen to listen to Chea Dara’s comments about the border. It is good to know the weak and strong points at the border,” he said.

Yim Phim, commander of RCAF Brigade 8, which is stationed near Preah Vihear temple, said the situation at the border was normal and that soldiers were in good spirits with the approach of the Khmer New Year holiday.

let least it's not everybody who do this. it's just one general, maybe this general needs education on not to boast too excessively or something, really!

What a joke with Chea Dara claim of victory. It sounds pretty much like Chhang Song during Lon Nol's regime.

The government should ask all generals, army commanders, heads of police etc. to attend short seminars on PR relations. In fact, every state ministry should have a media/press communication office that deals directly with the outside world, particularly, the press and reporters.

All state affairs pertain to national interest, security and reputation, and the standard in public communications for both domestic and international consumption is becoming sophisticated by the day. Cambodia needs cool heads in all fields if she is to grow and prosper.

In military matters, it is imperative to build your own strength and devise plans quietly and strenuously. Where you have once or twice prevailed over the opponents on the battle field, this should be seen as your deserved luck and the enemy's misfortune. Where your enemy prevails over you, this should be viewed a result of your own incompetence and shortcomings.

Be magnanimous in defeat and humble in triumph. Avoid boasting at all cost as boastfulness fosters self-delusion and overconfidence leading to recklessness. After all, the Khmer military has not conquered over new territories or captured new grounds yet - the soldiers are still being poorly paid and fed by most accounts.

When Hun Sen hired Taksin, Thais invaded Cambodia,
when Hun Sen visited border, Thais attacked Cambodia,
if Hun Sen is death, Thais will stop to bore Cambodians and Cambodia ?
What Chea Dara wants to say ?

You can be proud of those soldiers as much as you want to be but to me , I am not proud of them at all because they are there to die for Hun Sen .. not for the people of Cambodia. If Hun Sen dont want to see any blood he should have took the case to the UN long time ago.
According to what I have seen , alot of Army and police have been beating up innocent people just to protect the property of the rich and the powerful that have been conficated from the poor.

Nothing wrong to die for Mr. Hun Sen, because Mr. Hun Sen is the current PM of Cambodia.
He represents the Cambodian people. It means our soldier at the border ready to die for the Khmer people.
In case you love the Khmer people, please try to do you best to help them. Be realistic, you agree or not, but you can't change the situation.

BTW, I agree with poster 2:51.
The Scambodian military is all screwed up. There is no court martials to keep them in line. Therefore, they act like a crooked.....Police Officers. Military duties are to protect the nations, not individual rights. Instead, Huynh Sen use them at his disposal to oppress the nations.
Perhaps, someone like 6:58 can till his daddy (Kvack) that there is a things called.....Military Police.
