The “Cambodian Women’s Movement” is valueless … enough to attract the attention of the government?

Tith Sothea claimed that the the Grassroots Cambodian Women’s Movement is valueless in terms of national development, yet, this government mouthpiece still couldn't resist but being attracted by the issues raised by the Women's Movement. So is the Women's Movement valueless as Tith Sothea claimed or is it time for Hun Xen and Xok An to replace this clueless flatulent windpipe?

Gov’t official: Cambodian Women’s Movement is valueless for national development

27 July 2010
By Son Sopheak
DAP news
Translated from Khmer by Heng Soy

Phnom Penh – A government official declared that the Cambodian Women Movement – which expressed its concerns over the freedom of expression and the respect of women rights in Cambodia – has no value for the national development because this group was set up to support only one individual.

The claim was made by this [stupid] official after the Grassroots Cambodian Women’s Movement issued a joint statement supporting and defending SRP MP Mu Sochua. The Women’s Movement indicated that it represents the Cambodian people, including human rights advocates, garment workers, sex workers, beer-promotion women, community members, motor-taxi drivers, university students, vendors, farmers, union members, teachers, government officials, and NGO representatives, and it is concerned about the freedom of expression and the respect of women’s rights in Cambodia.

Tith Sothea, government advisor and mouthpiece of the Press and Quick Reaction Unit of the Council of Ministers, said on 27 July that this women’s group was formed to serve the ambition of an individual only and that it does not represent all the women in the country. Tith Sothea claimed that the extreme demands made the group have no value for national development at a time when Cambodia is abiding by the rule of law (sic!).

During a meeting of about 15 people, most of whom were women, at the Baitong Restaurant on Tuesday morning, the Women’s Movement declared in its joint statement that they call on the government to show strong commitment and take more visible responsibility in putting in practice the promotion of: (1) Women’s roles and participation in politics, (2) Women’s rights; (3) Freedom of expression; and (4) A fair judicial system.

Tith Sothea, the (stupid) government mouthpiece, stressed that the formation of this Women’s Movement was done to set up a foundation for political and popularity gain for an opposition MP so that she can compete with the opposition party leader (sic!). Tith Sothea voiced the government’s mantra, claiming that freedom of expression and the respect of democracy is widely accepted in Cambodia, unlike what the Women’s Movement claimed.

Tith Sothea, you are right about it when you say this Grassroots Cambodian Women’s Movement doesnt represent all women in Cambodia . Only stupid people don't know that it doesn't represent all Cambodian women but of course , it's big enough to get the government attention isn't it ? It seems to me like you are the one that's useless when you make a statement . By the way, this is just the beginning . It will get bigger and faster than you and your government ever thought . Just wait and see.

No one said that all women in Cambodia support this idea but not all men and women in Cambodia voted for CPP either . No need to be a rocket science to know what I mean.

everyone can help to make a difference. this includes the newly formed khmer women's movement. it can also be called women's rights advocate, etc... it is good for khmer women to step out into the work force and into the men's world. encourage all khmer women to be courageous and to stand up for their rights to participate in gov't, in higher education, etc... in the future, look around the world, women are starting to be prominant in gov't, etc... women can study to become a doctor, a lawyer, etc beside just being traditional housewife, really! do look around the world for inspiration for khmer women. god bless khmer women.

remember educate matters a lot in order for women to achieve at the level of men's, etc... be women's advocate!

1:12 pm, "etc.." you're back...well I am glad to hear that you are supporting women's movernment. But you must encourage our Khmer men to support women's movernment. They should start helping with house's work and take care children (for that these working women that support at the grassroot level do not have house keeper). So, Khmer men..this is the time that you could contribute to Khmer women's moverment as well. Give up some of your time in the coffee shope for 30 minutes per day...give up some time from watching football at the coffee shope. Keep that 3000 riel coffee money and buy school supply for your children. Or buy one rose to thank your wife for her hard work for the family. Acknowledge your wife contribution to the family, community and the society at large...

1:12 pm - welcome back to the discussion..

khmer women movement should have an agenda and a purpose, otherwise, it is ineffective same like so called royalist party! make sure you make yourself known by law as well, not just by existence. keep in mind the purpose i hope is not to divide cambodia be against authority, but to make a difference such as reforms, etc... that is more effective, really!

i know, to label khmer women as "valueless" is showing his true color of male chauvinist and egotistic, evil, uneducated individual he really is! shame on you, mr. tith sothea! have respect for women. they're your grandmother, your mother, your wife, you aunt, your niece, your daughter, etc... don't tell me you like to beat them everyday for being a woman! shame on you; you showed the world and cambodia how undereducated you are, and you are a gov't official? they ought to remove you for good and send you to education camp about women's rights, etc...!

Hay "etc.." and "really.." are you one person or two seperate person, but friend in anyway...

Well, "etc.." and "really..", I support your ideas in term of not against anyone, or govt. to that matter...but how we can change the current situation so that everybody can benefit from the economic progress. The current triggle down system is not working fast enough...govt. should be careful with the an increasing of Khmer educate youth without jobs...jobs creation, strenghten institution and rule of laws should be the utmost in the govt. agenda...in addition, the govt. should tap the resources with young Khmer educate..otherwise would be the lost opportunity for the country. Just look at Phillippine right now, Phillippine is facing the brain drain from the country....Cambodia will go down this path if the govt. is not promote job creation and innovation in the country....govt. could be constructive in the case of Ms. Mu...

Pertaining to govt. policy, both at the national and intl. level...Cambodian could learn a lot from other ASEAN...
