This criminal sentence defies virtually anyone's sense of what is just.
A man accused of taking part in one of the 20th century's worst cases of genocide has been given what amounts to a 19-year prison sentence.
His crime? Oh, he ran a prison in Phnom Penh, Cambodia - known as S-21 - where 14,000 Cambodians were murdered by the Khmer Rouge butchers who ruled Cambodia from 1975 until 1979.
Kaing Guek Eav, known as Duch, has been given credit for 16 years of time served, enabling the tribunal that convicted him to reduce his 35-year prison sentence to just 19 years.
Duch contended he only was following orders while overseeing the torture and murder of his countrymen. He took part in what has been labeled one of the worst cases of mass murder in history. The Khmer Rouge were responsible for eradicating one-fourth of Cambodia's population during its reign of terror; roughly 2 million people lost their lives during that dark time.
The U.N.-backed tribunal should have sent this individual to prison for the rest of his life. But as it stands, he conceivably could be free at the age of 86. Yes, he'll be an old man, but Duch doesn't deserve to be free in any context.
The sentence, understandably, drew shrieks of horror from Cambodians who remember the horror they survived.
Indeed, the horror suffered by Duch's victims at the former Tuol Sleng school in the middle of Phnom Penh defies description. That was the Khmer Rouge way, as the thugs who ran Cambodia hunted down men, women and children and subjected them to unspeakable torture.
Historians ought to note the end of this trial and the sentence it produced as a primary example of just how justice can be miscarried.
