Hun Sen issued a warning to the daring Thai troops stationed along the border near Preah Vihear temple. He said that if Thai soldiers want to fight to take back Preah Vihear temple, Thai army must prepare to bring in at least 30,000 to 50,000 of its soldiers. Hun Sen made this declaration at the National Education Institute in the morning of Tuesday 30 June 2009. Hun Sen claimed that he told Suthep Thaugsuban, Thailand’s deputy-PM, and Prawit Wongsuwan, Thailand’s defense minister, during their private visit with him last Saturday, that if Thailand wants to fight to take back Preah Vihear temple, Thailand will need at least 30,000 to 50,000 troops to fight against 10,000 battle-scarred Cambodian soldiers. Hun Sen added that Thailand counts a population of 70 million and an army of more than 300,000 men, whereas Cambodia counts a population of 14 million and an army of about 100,000 men. Therefore, if Thailand wants to attack Cambodian troops, they have to bring in a force of 30,000 to 50,000 soldiers to fight the 10,000-strong Cambodian troops.

ReplyDeleteI agreed that Thais won't scare without strong action. But, It is necessary to state number of Khmer troops vs Siamese troops. There are appropriate terms which may be used for such warning purpose, while at the same diplomatic support would gain should a war breakout.
I don't think Thais would win in the Preah Vihear battle, and therefore They are there just to show off. However, it escalates to a large-scale war, I don't think we have enough pilotes to fly the jets or take their jets or warships down.

Prime Minister Hun Sen tries to mislead Cambodian people about this issue.
ReplyDeleteThailand does not have an intention to fight any large scale war at Preah Vihear. The military alert is just the show of force in defending what they called their territory.
Vietnamese is annexing parts of Cambodian land and maritime borders. Hun Sen is taking public attention on Thai.

But when they don't have modern weapons such as artilleries, tanks, jet fighters and helicopters fighters, how can they fight with the Thais who have hundreds of tanks, artilleries, jet fighters, helicopters and so on. We can be tough only if we have enough troops and weapons to fight with.
Come to the real war, Thai tanks, artilleries and jet fighters will bomb Cambodian troops into pieces.
So the solution is for Hun Sen to eliminate corruption and use all the defense budget to buy new weapons, tanks, artilleries and planes so we can fight with Thais troops on an equal footing.

Cambodian army just received shipments of modern weapons. RCAF soldiers are now equipped with new rifles, anti-tank rockets, and new modern SAM (surface-to-air-missiles).
ReplyDeleteSiem has many tanks, aircrafts but these can be countered with soldiers carrying these types of weapons and the nice thing is that these weapons can be operated in the densely covered jungle areas by single soldiers.

5:38PM, the 10 Thai soldiers captured were the ones who stayed at Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvarak pagoda. Remember they stayed at a Cambodian pagoda where Cambodian monks and soldiers were staying as well. I mean they were not captured on the battlefields.
ReplyDeleteAs I said our soldiers are tough and brave, but they can only beat the enemy if they have enough troops and weapons to fight back. Thailand has three times more soldiers than Cambodia, more than 300 fighter planes, more than 2400 tanks and armored personnel carriers, more than 400 helicopters. What does Cambodia have? A few old tanks, old planes, old helicopters.
To give our brave soldiers a better chance of defeating the Thais on the battlefields would be to upgrade our army's capacity by buying more modern weapons such as tanks, helicopters and jet fighters etc.
Talk is cheap mr hun sen. History tells us that your army and the viet army were once defeated by Rannaridth nationalist and coalition forces. As a result the viet loss thousands and had to withdraw from cambodia. So your claim to pit cambodians against thais is nothing.
