The UN will appoint a new spokeswoman for the Khmer Rouge tribunal, to replace Peter Foster, who resigned in December 2008, officials said Wednesday.
Yuko Maeda, 45, will be appointed July 24, according to a statement from the Japanese government. She will work closely with spokesman Reach Sambath, her counterpart on the Cambodian side of the court.
Maeda, who has worked as a journalist and is the founder of a nongovernmental organization called Women Against Silence, will provide information about the tribunal to the national and international media, as well as the Cambodian public, according to the statement.
Maeda was “competitively” recruited from an open process from among “nationals from all countries,” said Lars Olsen, legal officer for the UN-backed court.
Japan is a major donor to the court, giving so far $39.55 million to the UN side of the tribunal and $7.36 million to the Cambodian side.

ReplyDeletei'm glad cambodia recently were introduced and trained by our good friends, the USA, the spokesperson skill and why it's good to have a spokesperson speaking on behalf of every gov't sectors, and so forth. cambodia is beginning to like the concept of spokesperson speaking in sectors of gov't instead of officials speaking for themselves. congratulations to cambodian gov't for adopting this seemingly foreign concept. yes, we can learn from everybody in the world. this is a good example of that. god bless cambodia.
ReplyDeletei think if any cambodian gov't spokesperson seems bias it is probably a reaction to other people's bias. in short, cambodians are just trying to defend our country because for so long already, before the introduction of the new concept of "spokesperson" from our good friends, the USA, there were lots and lots of unbalanced or biased view, opinions, comments, remarks, etc toward my beloved country cambodia and khmer. now that khmer people finally beginning to wake up and see the world and so on, of course, we will see our reaction more and more to the bias community out there who may have something against cambodia and my khmer people for some unknown reason! of course, naturally, khmer gov't spokesperson will retaliate or react to that. like they say, what goes around comes around! that said, our reaction will not always seems fair either, but it's like a demonstration against the overwhelmingly bias media, bias individuals out there who obviously dislike or disrespect cambodia and khmer people for that matter. more power to cambodia and khmer people in defending our country from bad repuation, etc... we want to hear and see constructive criticism with approach to solution, not just blabbing your smelly mouths at cambodia just. that's not the right thing to do. i'm sure there are other ways to make friends with cambodia; and being biased sure isn't one of them. god bless cambodia.
