Govt signals it could release Hang Chakra

JAILED newspaper publisher Hang Chakra "could be freed" because of his failing health, Information Minister Khieu Kanharith said Tuesday.

In a meeting with Cambodian journalists, the minister acknowledged that reversing the court's decision would not be easy but said his deteriorating health could prove enough to secure his release. "No one can make any promises," he said, but he noted that if Hang Chakra were granted amnesty - which can only be done by the King - the government would release him.

Last month, Hang Chakra's lawyer, Choung Chou Ngy, expressed concern over his client's "faltering health", saying he had lost weight since being incarcerated at Prey Sar. The minister's comments were welcomed by Touch Nora, president of the Cambodia Watch of Journalists Association, who described it as a glimmer of hope. "This compromise is hopeful," he said.

Hang Chakra was convicted in June of defamation and publishing false information in a series of articles accusing officials working for Deputy Prime Minister Sok An of corruption. He was sentenced to one year in prison and fined 9 million riels (US$2,187). The Court of Appeal rejected his case on August 11.

It is up to the government to release of jail anybody. Then now they release him..

This is a strange rule of law.

In my opinion, PM Hun Sen is the face of this government. But the real power that communicate with the Viets is Sok An. If I am wrong please correct me...but from listening to people and looking at what Sok An been doing to the land grabbing in Cambodia, it is obvious.

Heng Chakra could be released because of his health ? That's bogus . It got to be something else but they don't want to tell the truth because it will make them look bad . Heng Chakra is not the only prisonor who has a health problem but , why is he the only one who will get released ?

A few weeks ago after they got the letter from the King asking the court to take another look at Heng Chakra's case and they said , there was nothing that they could do but now they say , Heng Chakra can be released . Are they following the rule of law or the rule of someone ?
No wonder why almost every lawsuit the poor will lose the case to the rich or the powerful people .

Our slogan goes" a dog with a twisted tail will stay twisted". Hun Sen who has been a Khmer Rouge cadre since he was a Khmer Rouge who has killed people without any investigation is still very arrogant for his crime. He has never changed his attitude to be more human at all. Since there is no warning to him from a powerfull international community, he still continue to thread Cambodian people like dirts and like slave. It is about time that all Cambodian around the world join hand together to tell him enough is enough your criminal. Your time is about up to judge by people judge. Without international interference, all these criminals are still continueing to create fears for Cambodian people and will not allow human right to take root in Cambodia at all. We must condone with this kind of thread and intimidation at all.
