The government accuses Mr Rainsy of forging public documents and spreading false information about a border dispute with Vietnam.
Mr Rainsy, who is living in exile, was given a two-year jail term last month for a political protest in which markers along the border were uprooted.
He could face up to 18 years in prison if found guilty of the latest charges.
"The lawsuit involves forging public documents and publicising disinformation related to the forgery of a map in order to manipulate the public over the border issue with Vietnam," government lawyer Ky Tech told the AFP news agency.
'Political tool'
In January, Mr Rainsy was given the two-year jail term in his absence for encouraging villagers to uproot the border markings.
He did not attend the hearing, saying in an e-mail believed to have been sent from France, that the case against him was politically motivated.
"The court in Cambodia is just a political tool for the ruling party to crack down on the opposition," he said.

Cambodia and Vietnam officially began demarcating their contentious border in September 2006, in a bid to end decades of territorial disputes.
The 1,270-kilometre (790-mile) border has remained essentially unmarked and vague since French colonial times, with stone markers and boundary flags having disappeared, while trees once lining it were cut down.
Mr Rainsy's party accuses the Cambodian government of ceding territory to its larger and more powerful neighbour.

He is better off fighting from abroad instead of in Cambodia where is completely controlled by the Xen regime. Sam Rainsy is not afraid of facing justice in any place, but he would not be given a fair justice in the corrupt court system of Cambodia.

Let's just look at the current issues. In this regimes, who dare to confront Hun Xen regarding the East border situation? What other opposition party beside SRP dare to stand off with CPP government?
NONE! Right? Then stop critics for those who dare to help our nation. We all should thanks them for their courages and dedications. We should support and stand behind whoever do for the right cause of our nation. That does not mean only Mr. Sam Rainsy or SRP. It's just right now for the momment is Mr. Sam Rainsy and SRP.
The political career end should be Hun Xen and his CPP clans. They have been abusing and killing our people and nation more then enough. ENOUGH IS EENOUGH!

I think it is enough for the Cambodian people to judge who is a real Khmer nationalist. I believe the majority of Khmers can see this clearly, except some who are receiving fortunes from the Hun Sen regime. Every Khmer knows that there are many illegal Vietnameses in Cambodia, Vietname has always intended to control Cambodia, the Hun Sen government is still working under the Viet communiste. Moreover, every khmer knows that only the Hun Sen family and his clan took all the resources from Cambodia and became a millionaire. So, why everyone is still sleeping? Please it's time to wake up now.

ReplyDeleteA lot of Khmer overseas didn’t care going back to Cambodia to rebuilding the country after Paris Peace Accord was signed. But Sam Raingsy did care going back, leaving behind his good life as prosperous investment firm director. Remember the event still unpunished of 1997 Grenade Attack on Opposition Party. Sam Raingsy was at the forefront of the demo. He owed his life saved to his bodyguard that day. But his courage was confirmed by several other events of that nature again and again after. No he is not the one who cares only for his own skin. Sometime you need to go away to be able to come back again. I am sure that he will come back one more time. Sure for a better Cambodia, free from domination of the next door neighbour hegemonic country, imperialist Vietnam. He will be back for a socially better Cambodia and prosperous country, respected by all partners.
