You are talking a newly foreign owned newspaper company trying to lecture us in our country for how our word "youn" should mean. What a fuck are they trying to do - get some attention? I am sick of this. Let's the post write more about other racist words from other countries so we could learn more about their profession of being a linguistic newspaper.

I totally agree that an apology by the PP Post deemed crucial and necessary. It's a misunderstanding on their part. The best way is to correct the mistakes...and continue on our daily business...

    Dear KI,

Here is my response I'd like to send to PPP editors. Can you post it on your front page blog, and send a copy to PPP? Thanks,

    *********************
The recent characterization of the word “YOUN” by PP Post (foreign) editors is arguably absurd and provocative. It is outrageous that some Westerners think they have the rights to go around and impose their views on different parts of the world without any respects for the local histories, cultures and traditions. That kind of attitude is one of the main reasons why we still have so many conflicts and violence in the world.

That being said, the word “YUON” was originally introduced, without passion or prejudice, as a reference to the ethnic group living in the Northern part of what is presently known as Vietnam. In the present days though, particularly after the 1979 invasion, Vietnam has fallaciously publicized or campaigned that word, which has been in use for hundreds of years, as racist, derogatory or pejorative. For Khmer people, such campaign shows once again Vietnamese’s blatant attempt at deception to rewrite its dark history, and to cast aggressors as victims and vice versa.

Historically, “yuon” ethnic had repeatedly exploited Khmer’s compassion, kindness, generosity, and later weakness, to absorb Khmer’s land and assimilate Khmer’s culture and tradition. Some of the methods they used to assimilate Khmers were among the most cruel and barbaric in human history. Till the present days, these Yuons continue to inflict extreme suffering on Khmer people, and I would challenge all editors of PP Post to visit or live with Khmer Krom people to discover the trust themselves.

Yuons know fully well that Khmers would never forgive and trust them again because of the historical losses and sufferings. So they are doing everything they can to erase that dark history from Khmers’ memory. One way to achieve that goal is to eliminate the word “Yuon” from Khmer language because they (Yuons) see that word as a bitter reminder to all Khmers of the deceptions, coercions, crimes and atrocity committed by Yuon ethnic to Khmer people. By forcing Khmers to call them Vietnamese, they hope Khmers younger and future generations will not remember the dark history. They are wrong! As our ancestors had done in the past, we will resist them and tell the history to our children and grand children as it happened.

So why is it so important to Vietnam that current and future Khmer generations are not reminded or told of the dark history between Khmers and Yuons? To some foreigners, it has the appearance of a normal way to leave the past behind and embrace a new world. But to Khmer people who have been exposed to Vietnam’s ambitions and aggressions for hundreds of years, it is just another yuons’ attempt to fulfill Ho Chi Minh’s dream of annexing the remaining Khmer territory.

PS: I am writing a song and hope to share with all of you once completed. Here is an excerpt:

“ KHMER EUY SAUM NEAK KOM PLIX THA

Once again, Youn" is not the only word use in Khmer language, Thai uses the word 'Youn' same as Khmer. If you are in Thailand, you say 'Youn' the Thai people understand it. The word 'Youn' it means Vietnamese, not racist. Regarding the word 'Youn', I believe Loa and Burmese use the same as to Khmer and Thai.

I can speak Thai, and according to the Thai, they hat YOUN as well.

(Note: If you write longe sentence like a book, I won't have time to read it. Thanks)

Samnawk is totally correct with his approach to the PP Post. Although I am very please to see khmer people have vented their anger with this controversy, I would very much like to propose our compatriots to please concentrate with the issue to the next level. We all have to be clear that display our emotion is just one way to tell the ignorant people who misuse or mislead the meaning of the word YOUN. But we have to be determined to officially inform, respond, reply, what ever circumstance might be, directly to the ignorant people including the Editor of the Post about our intention. in this case we take Samnawk's comment as a perfect example to be the right approach in dealing with the editor of the PPP. In doing so we will have our chance/opportunity to educate the ignorant with the term Youn. Not only we can bring the message across to the ignorant but to the others who have been misled or uneducated with the meaning of the word Youn to be mindful when they try to stir up this issue again. Please consider our valuable resources so far and do ourselves a favor by exercising our rights and responsibility to take proper action and show our strength in defending our culture, literature and integrity of our Khmer race. The journey of a long walk starts with a first step.

The word Youn is neutral, however, it can be use to express hatred and disgust toward the Vietnamese. Thus the politicians should avoid using it to be neutral, and use their formal name instead. In America the politician avoid using the word Negro to describe the Black people, even though the word Negro is scientific name for black race.

7:52am, who are you learning this from, certain not educated khmer people. again, it's the usage that convey negative meaning, not the word itself. man, some people brain must be defected for they cannot understand a simple explanation by khmer people. maybe they should be deported from cambodia for disturbing peace, disobeying local law, culture, etc... get educated already, would ya!

No matter what the interpretation, positive or negative comments about the word YOUN, its meaning is remained the same to all the people who are Khmer, speak the language with genuine possession of Khmer culture.
I can only recall that the controversy of the word YOUN took place only after the puppet Heng Samrin government was installed in early 1979. It prime intention was to kowtow to its master Vietnam as implied only to political correctness. I remember they deliberately ordered to change Khmer language to suit their political agenda base on 2 valid reasons:
1- The so called Vietnamese experts have been controlling all government structure
2- many of the government officials are illiterate including Heng samrin, Chea Sim, but pretend to be scholar by proving with meaningless Phd qualification.
All Khmer intellectuals have been oppressed with freedom of exercising to utilize their genuine knowledge and skills with the correct Khmer vocabulary, grammar, colloquial term etc...
Vietnam and the CPP have been destroying Cambodia on a massive scale with their explicit attempt to eliminate the whole spirit of a nation and race that base on a very ancient rich culture and tradition. The cultural structure includes the Khmer literature has been seriously damaged because of the impact of the Pol Pot regime and the Vietnam invasion in Cambodia since 1975 until present time. The simulation of the Vietnamese-Khmer generation reflect its consequence on the debate of the word YOUN. This to prove their level of the lack of understanding of the subtlety of the Khmer language and culture.

Somnawk, speak for yourself. I am Khmer and I'm supporting the Phnom Penh Post. They have their right to question things. You want to take away the same right from them that you so demand for yourself? How hypocritical is that of you? huh? When things aren't what you like them to be, they are automatically wrong? Wake the fuck up and stop acting like 5 years old. That goes for the rest of you.

  21. Anonymous11:06 AM

Everybody misses the point here. It's not up to Khmers to judge whether the word is racist or not but up to Vietnamese. And almost every single Vietnamese of the Phnom Penh community agrees that this word is an insult. Same as N-word in US. If Khmers find the word Cao Mien or whatever Vietnamese use to designate Khmers offensive they have full write to complain and demand use of Kho Me or Khmer whichever is more appropriate. What's the fuck wrong with you guys bringing old dictionary for quotation? Is that dictionary has words like "cellphone" or "internet"? Language and the words have tendency to change and the word Y**n already changed its meaning and its meaning now an insult to Vietnamese. Yes, it was used to describe Vietnamese and was the only word in use until recent. BUT NOW IT CHANGED. Now there's word VIETNAM and the more Khmers insist on using Y##n the more Westerners will see it as a clear racist sign. It's that simple! If there's problem with Vietnam use the word Vietnam, be civilised.

  22. Anonymous11:15 AM

    Khmer Socialist,

Well said. I am Khmer too, and I know how this word Youn can be neutral like samlor majo Youn, but it is not neutral or can be use for insult, express hatred, and disgust when use in a context that Vietnam or vietnamese can be use properly but instead we use to use the word Youn to express our hatred.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Anonymous11:30 AM

so what if we insult them, they deserve it for always wanted to steal from khmer. plus, we reserve the rights to have choices in our usage of words. nothing wrong with that! do you really think all khmer are going to stop using the word "youn" just because some obnoxious foreigner dictate to us about our own language? i think not! tough luck. khmer reserves the rights to keep our language, ok!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Anonymous11:36 AM

what bothers me the most is that some ignorant foreigner tries to dictate to khmer people about khmer language. that's not right!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Anonymous11:39 AM

the word youn in khmer is easier for khmer people to say than vietnam. we don't like to use vietnam, plus, sometimes, khmer used them interchangeably as well, but don't dream that khmer people are going to stop using youn just because somebody says we should. not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's like they try to suppress or infringe on khmer people's right, etc... are those people brain-fart?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Anonymous11:40 AM

Sure we can continue to use this word, but we don't need to jump up and down mad if someone pointing out that this word Youn can be use to express hatred and insult the Vietnamese. We just admit it that yes it can be use this way too. Don't need to be mad, because it is right, it can be used to insult and express hatred toward the Vietnamese.

if youn continue to steal from khmer, then i think khmer people will fight back. youn must learn to do the right thing with khmer, ok! take the recent border demarcation for example, it is so obvious youn continue to steal khmer land in broard day light, youn also suppress khmer krom people right to freedom, etc... no wonderful khmer hated them. then they wonder why?

Bullshit Ah Kantorb, Ah Chor Phlon Dei Khmer.

You do ttry to wash away that your Yuon ancestors had done to Khmer people.

This word YUON is not a Racistas you had mentioned, but it's rather
your intention to blame on Khmers the problem makers, and you YUON, the Invaders of Cambodia, the Victims.

From Phanry Phan Rang provinces down south were belonged to Cambodia. YOU, YUON, the Invaders, and your 100,000 troops are still occupying Cambodia today with your over FIVE MILLIONS ILLEGAL VIETS TRAINED TO CONTROL ALL KHMER PROVINCES IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

If the pp-post can change the Ho Chi Minh city back to Prey Nokor city than all Khmers won't use the term "Youn" no more....How about that huh?.

All of you in here agree with me?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anonymous3:50 PM

If the word "YOUN" has change then tell me the change in what way?

There are plenty of words that Khmer people borrow from the foreigners such in Science and technology already because Cambodian don't have those words! But if Cambodia have enough vocabulary or words already and why do Khmer people need to borrow or change the word such as the word "YOUN"?

It seems that the Vietcong government is waging all out war on Cambodian people in every imaginable ways to deter Cambodian people and to make Cambodian people to surrender their identity, their culture, and their history and their language to every Vietcong government demand!

When the Vietcong breed injustice on Khmer people and they demand justice for themselves? How can this be? Up to now the Vietcong government still oppress million and million of Khmer people in Khmer Kampuchea Krom(Southern Vietnam) and nobody including the foreigners and the Vietnamese people called the action of the Vietcong government as a racist!

So for Vietcong government to oppress million of Khmer people is not a racist but for the Khmer people to use their language is called a racist? Do you see how twisted this logic is and it is so twisted and I can't begin to comprehend but to feel sad for all Khmer people who are a victim of the Vietcong government relentless naked aggression!

    Khmer will stand!

The owners and editors of this newspaper should consider that this is their privilege not a given right to run a media in Cambodia. Be sensible and responsible!
