Cambodia to launch multiple missile test

Cambodia will today conduct a multiple missile test but the move has raised a number of eyebrows. It comes as tensions with neighbouring Thailand continue and in the wake of Prime Minister Hun Sen's recent tour of military units on the shared border. But Hun Sen, his defence spokesman and analysts have played down the rocket launch, saying it's not intended as a show of force.

Presenter: Bo Hill
Speakers: Chhum Socheath, Cambodia's defence spokesman; Hun Sen, Cambodia's Prime Minister; Dr Christopher Roberts, Asian studies and international relations specialist from the University of Canberra

(SFX) HILL: 200 rounds of Russian-made BM21 rockets to test Cambodia's launch capabilities. Cambodia's defence spokesman, Chhum Socheath has told Radio Australia's Khmer service it's the first live munitions test in a long time for Cambodia.

CHHUM SOCHEATH: (Khmer) This will be the first time we're testing live BM21 munition since the time of military integration after the end of the civil war in 1998.

HILL: The first live munitions testing in more than 20 years... and all at a time when tensions with neighbour Thailand are at boiling point. Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen says it's a routine military drill.

HUN SEN: (Khmer) Soon we will use 10 BM21 in an exercise. But can I assure the Cambodian people this is not intended to show off Cambodia's military muscle.

HILL: Dr Christopher Roberts, an Asian studies and international relations expert from the University of Canberra, says it's important not to read too much into the military test.

ROBERTS: I tend to think that Hun Sen, if anything else, is primarily going about with daily business, and the way it was announced, just at the military academy, it may have been in the back of his mind how Thailand might react etc, but certainly the location is not provocative.

HILL: The rockets will be fired in Kompong Chhnang Province - very close to the capital Phnom Penh - nowhere near the Thai border, or the disputed Preah Vihear temple.

ROBERTS: At most there might be some deterrent value. For example, around the Preah Vihear temple they have purchased, or there's been reports of purchasing other land-to-air missile systems and laying landmines as well around the temple. In the worst case scenario, Hun Sen may be sitting there saying, you know, we are building up a deterrent factor, but at the end of the day, the two militaries are incomparable.

HILL: Southeast Asia specialist Dr Christopher Roberts says it's yet another case of Cambodia, like Thailand, using the political tensions to boost support amongst voters at home. For many Cambodians, however, the military test may not spur nationalistic fervour - but, instead, prompt the question, where did the estimated quarter of a million dollars needed for these rockets come from?

ROBERTS: That's a very good question. It doesn't have a lot of wealth, it shouldn't be in a position to be spending this sort of money on this type of weapons system, but unfortunately the military are often what brings legitimacy to the leaders in power, and so they get prioritised.

Yep, Cambodia already deployed many heat seeking missile that can even shoot down F16. If Thai Pilot foolish enough to cross into Cambodian air space, he will be greeted with the missile and other anti air craft weapons.

Cambodia defend is getting stronger each day. If Thai decide to send troop to invade Cambodia again, they will make a big mistake.

Some people can never be satisfy with anything. If the government don't have weapons, they say why don't we build up weapons to protect our nation. Then when the nation have weapons and exercise them to be prepared, they say where did that weapon come from!

Those who are crazy are the ones who sit day and night just to criticize. They wake up early in the morning to criticize and drink coffee to stay up late until morning to also criticize.

I wouldn't be surprised if after this message there will be that type of people calling me a supporter of CPP.

In fact, I am an ardent supporter of SRP. I thought I should voice myself out their so that CPP people do not think that all SRP supporters are mindless critique and nothing more.

I am not against CPP because it gives me something to be critical about, I am against it because it serves foreign interest and unsustainable growth more then it care about Khmer people and responsible development. I am anti-corruption. Not anti-government. If the CPP come out soon and adopt the anti-corruption law and changes its way, I would support them. But they wont.

Cambodian military should build SRP headquarter as a target for testing BM21 rockets.

Russia has a very good business and she has more money than the US and has no debt. Because Russia has more oil and build more weapons to sell to the countries like Cambodia, Vietnam, and some Islam countries. Those BM21 were shipped from Vietnam. Because China cannot directly help Cambodia, then it would be so obvious, since Thaksin is also in Cambodia.

NO DOUBT HUN XEN'S MILITARY DRILL IS JUST FLEXING MUSCLE AND IS ONLY STRONG ENOUGH TO THREAT ITS OWN POOR CITIZENS. SAD FOR CAMBODIA TO SELECT SUCH A LEADER. BLIND COUNTRY LEAD BY HALF-BLINDED MAN.

I think BM21 is the only best weapons Khmer having right now, we need more than just BM21 rockets..? Thailand do have these kind of weapons too.., and powerful military plane F-16, we must do something about our military weaponary ASAP! remembered Thai still have the best weapons...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Anonymous1:07 PM

Yo! Khmers don't need F-16 dude! all we need is missile to take down the fucken Thai F-16 craps! Khmers should buy powerful missile to shoot down any fucken Thais military plane...ya know what i'm saying..?

Regardless how dirt poor Cambodia is and Cambodia must and will have weapon to protect its sovereignty!

There are some issues that I disagree with Hun Sen but the testing of BM12 capability and I do favor much! I mean what is the fucken point of having a weapon system and doesn't know how to use it! As far as I am concerned the BM21 is a mediocre missile system but image converting this system into chemical delivery system and it even better! What Cambodia needs is a long range missile system with multiple warheads!

The cheapest way for Cambodia right now is to modernize their weapon system is to invest heavily in missile system whether it is long range or short range and landmine technology the silent killer!

It is inevitable that we will have WWWIII.

Use A10 to kill Soviet Tanks, BM21, and Sam7 sites. Then Use Cluster Bombs to spray all over Cambodia until all Hun Sen and it clans be dead.
Use M1A1 and M1A2 to advance first colum to Battambang, Siem Reap, Kompong Thom, Kompong Cham along HWY 6&7 toward to eastern border.
2nd colum Battambang, Pursat along HWY 5 toward to Phnom Penh.
3rd colum from Sea Kompong Som, Kompot, Takeo, kompong speu along HWY 2,3&4 toward to Phnom Penh. Use B2, B52, F117, Tomahak and Cruise Missiles to strike at Hun Sen's Compond in Takmao, Tuol Krosang and 4,000 Personal Bodygards.
Rule of engagement: shoot to kill!
    Capture: all cpp officials (.)

Fuck all of you Cambodians. Your enemy are not the Thai. The Thai are simply obnoxious bullies and won't lay a hand on you. Your REAL enemy are the Vietnamese. The Vietnamese are the ones you currently use your idiot Hun Sen as a proxy to cause trouble with Thailand. Vietnam already has Laos and currently is using Hun Sen to have him hand deliver Cambodia in a basket to Hanoi. Soon, Thailand will be Vietnam's as it tries to economically surpass the Thais by using the Cambodia-Thailand dilemna to create instability within Thailand.

I agree with comments above! Khmers need modern missile, i'm talking about computerize sytems missile, we don't need to fly the plane to bombs other country, all we need a pwoerful missile that could strike from far distance...so, this way Thai/Viet must respect CAMBODIA!! No wonder North Korea created pwerful missile...

This is the sign of introducing the Fourth Indo-China war begin!

If the war broke out between Cambodia and Thailand then the Vietnam must be prepared for their westward. Cambodia and Laos are the military tools for Vietnam to be in used.

This time Yuon will tell Cambodian leaders to fight with Thailand is the benefit of Khmer to gain old land back. sic!
Like Ghost yuon Ho Chi Minh told Sihanouk to help and fight for vietcong to liberate Kampuchea Krom for vietnam, vietnam will give kampuchea Krom back to khmer. sic!
