The United States says it has stopped a shipment of military trucks to Cambodia as punishment for sending Uighur asylum-seekers back to China.
State Department spokesman Philip Crowley says they failed to heed not only its call to step up to their international obligations but specific obligations they have as a country.
Cambodia in December deported the 20 Uighurs even though they were seeking UN refugee status and said they would face torture if returned.
The United States, which had warned against the deportation, said it was calling off a shipment of 200 trucks and trailers.

ReplyDeleteThe US need Hun Sen, regardless what they do and say in public. They need Hun Sen, the cambodian strong man for two main reasons:
1) to counteract to rising influence of China in the region.
2) to oppose the eventual spreading of "Islam extremism" in the region.
I am sure that the US would not hesitate one second to divide up Cambodia and give 1/2 to the siems and 1/2 to the viets.
Read history for the past 30 years.

ReplyDeleteIt is not about Cambodia the US cares about, it is about China that the US try to compete with.
The US have not been fair to Cambodia at all. It was the US who signaled to French to sign Khmer land at Kampuchea Krom to Vietnamese so the US would be able to use it as its base against China like in Thailand. Now the US sides with Hanoi and Hanoi uses every body to survive and to spread its expansionism to Thailand. The US will never disarm Hanoi but supporting behind, only China can destroy Vietnam.
That is why China built DAMS to stop these most aggressive Vietnamese, who deserved to be called Yuon.
Thai people don't have a clue that the Vietnamese are already infiltrated in their country. The US knew, but does it care? Nop.

Well, this is not so much about the aid to Cambodia from the US. But rather than, the signal by the US that Cambodia seem to leaning support toward China. This more off of geopolitical between Chinese and US rather than Just Cambodian. But who can say that Cambodian is not playing politice between the China pitting against the US? Just make sure that Cambodian is not over do it...otherwise....Cambodian have to be ready to substitute US's market for China market? Than another question -- will China give the share of her market for Cambodian export? Next move...US could decrease garment import from Cambodia!...Watch out govt...because almost 70% garment export from Cambodia is coming to US market!

ReplyDeleteI think US always critise on other country but not see him self. US also complain on IRAN and North Korea about Nuclear program but US have alot of Nuclear Weapon and continue to produced more and more.
US should complaint to Thailand also for forceing Khmers refugees to walk on land mines-fields...at Mali Mountain 1979, Khmers blown into pieces, some being shot, when they turns around...US should also complaint to Thailand that still invaded Cambodian-Lands right now...instead, US even help Thai drew the fake Map, to steal Khmers lands..??

Under the Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen Khmer Rouge Regime, no criminals that has been committed crimes against journalists, political opponents, leaders of the Free Trade Union, innocent men, women and children have ever been brought to justice.
Dear fellow bloggers - yes, any govt. can play politics pitting bettween supper powers, but first one has to understand how much strenght of one country within the geopolitice. Given the current time, Cambodian lack in many factors such as: the strenght on institution, the rule of laws, political power, and economic power..so the answer is that Cambodian do not have enough cheap to play. Another word,Cambodian is not ready to play geopolitics right now...given another decade with the govt. working with strenghten their institution, the rule of laws, respect human rights, and most of all, build the foundation of education for the population and promote enterprenueship. Promote market competition...and strenghten human capital (know what, know how, not just know who...) and promote interdependent and cooperation, within the nation, and between the nation...Long term vision is the must for Cambodia...if we as a nation want to compete and servive in the 21st century...
