Following Global Witness' acceptance to Hor Nambora's (aka Baby Hor) challenge to a public debate, Voice of America reported that Baby Hor backed down from his bluff and refused to debate Global Witness in public. Instead, the offspring of Hor 5 Hong chose to insult and curse Global Witness, calling Global Witness as "Chhkuot Chrouk" (crazy like a pig) and "having mental problem". The second insult is a term very popular among officials in the Hun Xen's regime to place blame on anybody who oppose them.
It seems that the "family of the thieves of Cambodia" do not have much to say to defend themselves, except for cursing and throwing tantrums.

ReplyDeleteYou are quite right, Anet Khmer, with your observation about this breed of unconscionable individuals, and there are, sadly, more than a few of them in positions of power in Cambodia today that carry on doing what they are best at: raping and betraying the people and nation with no ill conscience.
ReplyDeleteEven if the regime, in whose name they represent as Ambassadors, PM, Foreign Minister, advisors, judges, senators etc. were to collapse tomorrow, one suspects that they will still have enough wealth for themselves and their clans to live off for the next ten generations whether they choose to settle down in fashionable Dubai, Switzerland or any other safe havens that would never have cause to scrutinise their ill gotten gains.
That they feel the need to constantly defend the indefensible and silence anyone with the temerity to question their illicit practices is something that comes with the arrogance and habit of men accustomed to the exercise of sheer irresponsibility of unrepresentative, usurped public office.
For any public face of this Phnom Penh regime to have the audacity to invite a pubic debate on its environmental or human rights records at all is somewhat baffling. It is as if, neo-Nazi groups are calling for a public debate on the existence of concentration camps in Nazi occupied Europe! Normally, the usual method used to deal with domestic dissidents would be to issue a court warrant for them to appear before the kangaroo judges who then dispatch the 'trouble-makers' off to the notorious prison of Prey Sar where their spirit of resistance would be tested to the limit within the tortuous confines of their narrow cells.
However, Global Witness presents the regime with a rather awkward proposition - neither the London based NGO nor its director, Simon Taylor, would be silenced without some measure of political, diplomatic repercussions.
I am not sure about the applicability or details of the law pertaining to defamation committed by foreign nationals, but the cross examination of GW's charges or allegations thereof at any independent, neutral venue will not spell good news for the regime in question not only because Simon is a bright, courageous environmental campaigner, but simply because the main thrusts of the organisation's reports issued over the years are grounded on facts not dismissable rumours.
How many people had personally seen heavily loaded trucks carrying logs (described as 'toothpicks' by one government minister) along one of Phnom Penh's boulevards at the fall of dusk?
