UN raises concerns over Cambodia's human rights record

Thu, 17 Jun 2010
ABC Radio Australia

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Cambodia says he has serious concerns about the kingdom's human rights record.

Surya Prasad Subedi has just completed a 10 day fact-finding mission, focussing mainly on the judiciary.

He says he's uncovered serious shortcomings in a judicial system that is critically underfunded and fails to appropriately train people in the basics of human rights law.

Mr Subedi says Cambodia has made some progress, by allowing him and the UN to meet the King and senior government officials.

However, he says he's still troubled by serious human rights breaches, including the forced eviction of people in government land grabs.

'I'm quite troubled by the impact of land disputes and resettlements on the lives of ordinary people, both in the rural and urban areas, and miscarriages of justice and the narrowing of political space for critical debate in society, mainly due to the disproportionate use of defamation and incitement lawsuits against journalists, activists and political opponents."

ladies and gentlemen, let me paraphrase you 10:52's comment:

because others are stupid so it is okay for you to want to stay stupid like others.

because others kill each other, it is alright we kill each other.

because others sell their children, we should have no moral objection to selling ours.

because other steal, kill, plunder, threaten, burn, rape, loot, prostitute, and destroy - as long as we live by the same standards we should be happy!

Good job 10:52, you are a very wise, deep, and clever individual. You make a wise advisor to our great supreme leader strong leg decho Hun Sen.

Because while others still suffer, why should we Khmer strive to be happy and just for our people!

I am not a Hun Sen supporter. I don't care about him. All of you are missing the point. But at least I have the conversation started.

In the past couple months or so in this KI blog, I have read some of the comment which compared Cambodia with other asian country, especially Thailand. Each country has their own flaws, so it is better to focus on the solution than name calling and demonizing others. This kind of tattic will lead Cambodia nowhere but hatred toward each others. That was how the KR did to the peasant during the war, so when they had victory, all they had in their mind was revenge !!!!

Please learn from the past !!!!

    Do not promote hatred !!!!!

But feel proud to be Khmere again !!!!

If you live in the US, you know that the United States government has no respect toward UN body !!!!

    Dear Mr. Subedi,

We, the innocent Cambodian that are being taking advantage of by the ruling party CPP have no chances in fighting the corrupted justice systems in Cambodia. However, your findings are coming a couple of weeks too late. Why weren't you there in Cambodia doing your fact findings prior to the donors meeting? The donor nations needed your findings at least 2 weeks prior to the meeting with the senior(Old) useless Cambodian leaders. My group and people around my age are fully educated (30-40) and we are willing to serve Cambodia without any corrupted mind. We need to make sure that these so called senior (old) useless Cambodian leaders step down and yield the power to the younger generation...

I'm blessed to be borned a Khmer.
