Shame on the UN

Friday, 30 July 2010
Savun Neang
Letter to The Phnom Penh Post

Dear Editor,
"But it is forgetting or ignoring a key player, former Khmer Rouge head of state Norodom Sihanouk ... The Vietnamese installed the same Khmer Rouge cadres as puppet leaders, and about 85 percent are still ruling Cambodia today."
I was one of the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime. I really want justice for 73 members of my family, the majority of them executed without evidence of wrongdoing.

But personally, I don’t have faith, and I don’t believe or count on the United Nations’ tribunals obtaining justice for Cambodian victims.

The tribunal is focusing on Tuol Sleng prison (S-21) for the majority of the evidence to prosecute former Khmer Rouge leaders, including Duch, Ieng Sary, Kieu Samphan, Ieng Thirith and Nuon Chea.

But it is forgetting or ignoring a key player, former Khmer Rouge head of state Norodom Sihanouk.

Shame on the UN for wrongly focusing on S21, which was a prison for higher-ranking cadres of the Khmer Rouge’s revolution members. It had little to do with the real victims of the Khmer Rouge regime. S21 prison spilled only a little innocent Cambodian blood.

Again, shame on the UN. In 1979 there were at least a million Cambodians, I and my family included, who fled Cambodia after the Vietnamese invasion.

Many refugees had told the UN that the Khmer Rouge regime was a killing machine. But the UN ignored them and instead harboured the Khmer Rouge by allowing them to retain a seat at the UN from 1979 through 1991, even though they were no longer in power.

Justice has yet to be served 31 years after the collapse of the Khmer Rouge regime.

The Vietnamese installed the same Khmer Rouge cadres as puppet leaders, and about 85 percent are still ruling Cambodia today.

agree that the s21 was just a tiny drop of the atrocity in cambodia. it was the entire population and country of cambodia that was imprisoned and trapped and killed under the KR backward ideology. please listen to the survivors, we are the living witnesses to all of this. almost all khmer refugees who now lived overseas lived through it and witnessed and suffered the direct blow of the KR killing machine. yes, the survivors are the true eyewitnesses. it's not fabricate, it is the truth, a painful truth when we talked about it, really!

1:39 AM USC I share your feeling about the verdict of this tribunal.
From the start i have no confident on this court based on interferrence by the Hun Sen's regime. It seems they set the limit on justice and the UN keeps negotiating with the regime to find the compromise level for the anticipated outcome thus there would be no REAL JUSTICE for Khmer victims. So we khmer innocence should learn from this not to let khmer stupid leaders lead us to destruction like this again. We have to find ways to salvage our country. Hope all true khmer will meet together someday.

    To 5:21 AM,

Perhaps you dont quite clearly understood what the fuck I am saying. Learn your histories, because there arent any...Khmer Rouge has destroyed everything. They have burnt books, reports, essay, chronologies, and even killed many professors, so Khmer can go back to as far as 100 years behind the Viets and the Thais. Open your eyes, listen with your ears and watch how things are progressing. Soon, your stupid fucking ignorant bastard will learn something. Dont come in here and start to bark without knowing your sources. Better yet, ask your fucking parents, if you have one or maybe Khmer Rouge has killed them as well. You fucking piece of shit.

You stupid morron Savun Neang. Let us look at the historical facts. Sihanouk was never a Khmer Rouge head of state. He was head of the Royal Khmer Gouvernment in exile (GRUNK) from 1970 to 1975 to help liberate Cambodia from Lon Nol and its American allies. After April 17 victory over the American supported Lon Nol regime, the Khmer Rouge put Sihanook under house arrest and Pol Pot became the real master of Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. Wise up man. Stop the lies.

I DONT KNOW WHERE YOU GET YOUR EDUCATION FROM, WHO TAUGHT YOU, WHAT UNIVERSITIES YOU HAVE ATTENDED, OR WHERE YOU ARE RESIDING, BUT ONE THING FOR SURE, YOU HAVE NOT BEEN PROPERLY INFORMED. I URGE YOU TO DO MORE RESEARCH AND LOOK IN THE RIGHT PLACES AND SOON YOU WILL SEE AND KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT CERTAIN LEADERS IN KAMPUCHEA. HERE IS A SIMPLE ANALOGY FOR YOU, "IF IT SMELLS LIKE SHIT, IT IS MOSTLY LIKEY SHIT." IN THIS SENSE, WITHOUT SIHANOUK THERE WOULD NOT BE KHMER ROUGE, WITHOUT CHINA THERE WOULD NOT BE KHMER ROUGE, WITHOUT THAILAND THERE WOULD NOT BE KHMER ROUGE, WITHOUT VIETNAM THERE WOULD NOT BE KHMER ROUGE, WITHOUT UNITED STATES THERE WOULD NOT BE KHMER ROUGE. AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THIS LITTLE INSTANCES, YOU CAN SEE THAT ANYONE COULD BE LIABLED FOR THE ATROCITY IN KAMPUCHEA. BUT ABOVE ALL ELSE, SIHANOUK WAS THE ONE WHO REFUSED TO COME BACK TO CAMBODIA TO TAKE HIS POSITION, BUT INSTEAD, HE HAS REQUESTED AND APPOINTED LON NOL TO TAKE HIS PLACE, BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE IN KAMPUCHEA WHO HATED SIHANOUK AND DISLIKES WHAT HE IS DOING TO KAMPUCHEA UNDER HIS REIGN. SIHANOUK AS KING, HAS KILLED MANY KHMER HEROES, BUT NO ONE DARE TO SAY ANYTHING TO HIM BECAUSE THEY AFRAID OF LOSING THEIR LIFE AND THEIR WEALTH BY AGREEING WITH EVERYTHING SIHANOUK SAID. I THINK IS SIFFICIENT FOR YOU TO DIGEST FOR NOW. LEARN THE TRUTH AND THE TRUTH SHALL OPEN YOUR EYES.
