Update on SRP MP Mu Sochua and the Grassroot Movement of Cambodian Women

Dear all,

The Cambodia Daily published today (Monday 19th July) a declaration made by Mu Sochua (see post below). After Friday's decision by the government, Mu Sochua declared "I wish to make it clear that the decision of the courts, if carried out, will be against my will".

Further, Cheam Yeap, chairman of the government's Commission on Economy, Finance, Banking and Audit, said the government could not take money out of Mrs. Sochua's pay unless she agreed.

However, the Investigating Judge Chea Sok Heang, who sent the letter on Friday informing her that the compensation money will be taken directly from her parliamentary salary, could not be reached for comment (by Eang Mengleng, "Mu Sochua's Arrest Delayed, Prosecutor Says", Cambodia Daily, Monday July 19).

Uncertainty thus remains.

However, Mu Sochua, as always, is continuing her fight, "the struggle for an independent judiciary begins now". Further Mu Sochua is now officially acknowledging the Grassroot Movement of Cambodian Women which gathered in the last weeks. Moreover, as planned last week, a conference will be held later this week with Mu Sochua and representatives of the movement. We will send you details soon.

Warmest regards

Victoria on behalf of the Grassroot Movement of Cambodian Women

This is nothing to do with injustice to women. It is a but one Strong Leg lady Vs Strong Leg PM.

It has nothing to do with freedom of speech because it was Mu Sochua who sue HS first about his speech and when he sue her back and won, she cry injustice.

If she know the court is corrupt why in the heck she try to sue HS in a corrupted court! This is totally illogical. So this whole mess was started by MS. Mu and now she try to drag more Cambodian women into this mess with her.

To those we are less educated and poor, her appeal seem good from the outside, but they don't know the agenda behind it. Mu Sochua is more concern about making herself famous like Ung San of Burma than to care about individual woman in Cambodia. She is using the blood and pain of others for her own benefits.

She is trying to help Cambodian courts, teach them how justice is because actually Cambodian judges are just a band of MONKEYS, they learn to be dog instead of praticing their law skill seriously.

6:12pm..I agreed with you! I think she explointing the Khmer women for her benefit, more than try to help them get food to put in their pot....as an MP, she should know that more than 30% of Khmer population still live under the powerty-line (in the 30% - more than 50% of them are women and children)...do these 30% concern more about justic than to get food on the plate for their children?....Come on Ms. Sochua -if you ever experience the hunger during the KR period...you might understand their priority...Justic cannot come before "meet the need of hunger." - just try to understand the Maslow's theory...In this clase - aren't you explointing the Khmer court system and khmer people as much as HS does?....

Who give a dam about kiddy petty fight between Ms Mu and HS, it was their problem. Why need to drag the country and the world into this mess. Just let the two of them to settle this matter. No need to blow it up and make a political gain. That is wrong.

To 10:31, unfortunately Ms. Mu and Mr. Sam Rainsy never live under the KR regime, so they never understand hunger and poverty like those who live through that regime. That is the reason why HS can win the heart and mind of common people. Not because he is more educate or have high class background, but he understand common people and thus he know what those people need.

well, that's because she has a choice to pay or go to jail; and looks like she chose to go to jail, so respect her for choosing that choice, really! as for judicial reforms, that's another story altogether. remember, there is a real distinction between defamation human rights abuse which in her case it is more of a defamation case, and has nothing to do with abusing women's rights, human rights abuse, etc..., really! i mean there ought to be a law in cambodia to discourage people from personal attacking another person's personal or physical handicapped. in america, that there is a law called the american with disability act that protect people deemed disabled or handicapped, so cambodia should have or adopt similar law to protect people with handicapped from being freely attack by people like mu sochua, etc..., really! educated people should know this already, why still act ignorant?

Ok 12:18 am, that is the point that I would like to make is Ms. Sochua never live through the KR regime, and on top of that she marriage to Foreigner (not the Khmer men), 1) she does not understand the pain that people had gone through without food, 2)she never expose to the abuse like majority of Khmer women that have been domestically ambuse by their husband and the in-law relative (which I like to call these in-law=out-law). The degree physical and mental pain of majority Khmer women gone through - she didn't know, does not know and will not know (yes, she had gone to country side for her campaign and touch a few sick chidren - that does not constitute her to understand their physical and mental pain). Just look at the way she wear her Krama (which suppose to be a signiture movement - she does not wear like the rest of Khmer women peasent that she suppose to support...). The subtle of way she wear her Krama still sysbolize that she is supperior than the rest of the people that she suppose to represent...

that right, mu sochua must learn to walk in khmer women's shoes too before she claim that she knows or understands everything about how khmer women went through! i have the feeling she is no different than those elitist people who they claimed to care for cambodian people, maybe for her own personal ambition is more like it! good analysis!
