I am compelled to write this letter as I cannot bear witnessing Cambodia’s flag has until this hour of my writing been flying upside down in complete reversed position at the headquarters of the United Nations here in New York City.
Regardless of whatever underlying reasons whether an unintentional protocol flaws as a result of UN staff’s negligence or the carelessness from the Cambodian government side, to me as well as to all Khmer citizens, such act is completely disturbing and embarrassing as Cambodia flag is the only one that has been flying so. It shall thus never be acceptable and allowed since flag can mean a matter of life and death for a nation on the international arena as it represents a nation’s face, prestige, identity, pride, patriotism, nationalism, unity and soul, etc., in particular when Cambodia is chairing the ASEAN Summit.
Does this not imply a disrespect of Cambodia and her people as a whole or is it a flag desecration? Or does it mean a declaration that Cambodia is a nation in distress or emergency situation that deserves immediate international help? Have the Cambodian Ambassador to the UN and his team ever noticed about this? Definitely, a proper explanation is required should the Cambodian government be serious about that.
Although Cambodia flag has been inscribed in the Constitution, it has been noted that not much attention has been paid to the proper use of Cambodia flag domestically or internationally while the country has yet to have any Flag Code or Flag Protocol. Unlike in the US or other nations, the country has never observed a single national Flag Day. In addition, the issue of flag of convenience remains a headache for the Cambodian government. Yet, not many actions have been seen actively taken.
It is time that our government should start thinking about this issue seriously if it really wants to raise Cambodia’s image internationally and does not want to repeat such embarrassing which could imply its weaknesses. While it is widely said that, “We weave the flag, we live under the flag and we also die under flag;” or “A patriot wraps himself around the flag to defend it; a scoundrel wraps it around himself to defend himself,” how far has these ideas been practiced and upheld by Cambodian government and its citizens?

Someone please contact the UN to fire this idiot who disrespect our national flag. This is not a mistake, this idiot did on purpose. He or she probably Siam, Youn, Lao descendent. All three I mentioned are Khmer thief neighbors. These three are always looking to disrespect Khmer race. Three days ago I went to Laose restaurant and looking into their menu I ONLY see Lao, Thai, Youn foods. It's like Khmer doesn't exist in their minds. ReplyDeleteWhen we at this restaurant me, family and friends were discussing Prasat Preah Vihear about Siam thieves trying to steal what's not their. You can see the Laotian waitress and owners were stairing at us with hatres. You would think Lao people don't care about Siam but they do very much. Their two governments had fought war before but these two peoples are much closer to each others. Fucking Laos and Siam now are building Xamburi Dam upstream of Cambodia Mekong river. This dam will fuck up Cambodia fisheries and rice production. Our Tonle Sap will be affected. They are trying to kill Khmer peoples this way. Cambodia must keep a close eyes on this three thieves.

it shows ignorant and uneducated about cambodia by some of the world organization out there, i think. flags display like this should be common sense to check and see the correct way to fly them by the people who were in charge at the UN place in new york. there is no good excuse at all about this careless mistake. and don't politicize this because it show bias, prejudice, discrimination, etc against cambodia. it is everyone's responsible to be proactive and help to promote and look out for our country cambodia no matter what political party or what differences anyone may have, really. we all can help to make a good difference for our beautiful country of cambodia, ok! don't wait for someone else to correct or say something about it, if we see it's wrong or fraud or abuse, then report it the proper authority right away. two wrongs don't make it right, correct it asap! how would anyone like it if cambodia fly their flag backward, upside down, or use wrong colors or wrong design, etc on your national flag? well, think about how cambodia and khmer people would feel as well, ok! don't hate us, just correct it. get educated about cambodia's flag, etc already, please!

But the country has been running backward, losing territory to neighbor, killing its own citizens, and poisoning its own land, how loud has the cry been? Unbelievable!!! after posting the photos along with my writing earlier today, i got some comments saying the picture was using photoshop. Another insulting on insulting!!! I took them with my own camera while I was there at the UN Plaza on Tuesday, Jul 3, 2012, New York Time (the day when our flag was flying upside down). The flag returned to its correct position today after posting this writing on KI-Media. Thanks all for sharing your concerns. I will add more photos from my friend's camera on my facebook soon for your evidence!

1. UN Plaza does not mean UN Headquarters. The official flags located at UN Headquarter are not these ones.
