The Cambodian Independent Teachers Association on Monday requested a doubling of teacher salaries, as the cost of living continues to rise.
The price of consumer goods and fuel have put a strain on teachers, and a 20 percent raise would not be enough to cover the costs, the association said in a letter.
“If the government cannot lower the price of goods, the association asks it to double the salary of teachers to balance against the high price of goods,” said Rong Chhun, the association president.
Education Minister Kol Pheng could not be reached for comment.
Chea Se, undersecretary of state of the ministry, said he did not support the request.
“As a principle, we have to ask the government to help decrease the price of goods to balance with the salary,” he said.
The higher costs of living have put a bite on many of Cambodia’s poor, straining the already low wages of the nation’s educators.
The price of fuel reached 5,000 riel per liter Monday.

this makes more sense for teachers to get a higher salary.
ReplyDeleteI support Rong Chhun entirely. I found that Cambodian salary payments are in a mess at present. There are people who can earn from $25 and $2000 per month. What are their different? Have the $2000 per month got bigger stomach and the $25 got smaller stomach? No !! they are all the same. Why the gap is so large?
ReplyDeleteHun Sen and his entire government should resign and shouldn't come back for trying to be government again for failing to collect enough taxes to pay salary earners to an appropriated level so that they can live with dignity and pride and also the country can retain human resourses. For the present payment, Cambodia cannot retains their intellectuals to stay home. Everyone must has a right to earn at a liveable level from US$ 300.00 onward for all high School teachers and US$250 for Primary teachers. All police and ordinary public servants must earn at least US$200 per month. All factory workers must have earned at least US$75 per month.
All of those who refuse these proposal should resign and go to hell, allowing other to perform their job. We must cut Budget from Royal palace from US$ 5 millions to US$i millions for fair to everyone. The King Should earn only $US 3000 per month ( so one US$ 36,000 Free tax). Areak Prey
cambodia workers have to work diligently to demand this kind of salary. it will take time, but people have to keep demanding the gov't to give them these kind of salary. this is why it is important for people to vote for their leaders of choice who can keep their promises to help cambodia and her people to live a better live for everyone. god bless cambodia.

How can Cambodian people practice democracy when Cambodia has so many uneducated people who can't even think beyond their stomach?

All teachers deserve to have quadruple of what they are receiving today. If compared to the idle congressmen and senators, teachers work much harder.

MP in Nom Penh is $2,000 plus all perks
Teacher 's gross pay in Cambod is $30.00 before the principal's cut.
Om Yin Tieng's pay is between Riel 7,000,000 to 10,000,000 divided by3400=$1 plus big villa and SUV plus personal driver 's pay $130/month.

ReplyDeleteThe reality of the hardship on dirt poor Cambodian people in Cambodia is too obvious because the inflation is too high and it will crush dirt poor Cambodian people to death! Everything fucking things are going up such as rice, fuel, land, fish, meat...not including medicine, electricity, water...
What Mr. Rong Chhung asking for is within the limit due to high inflation! Dirt poor Cambodian people are being asked to sacrifice many times before to absorb the low wage to attract foreign investment and they work hard like animal too! Is this too much to ask?
Now it is up to AH HUN SEN government to do the fucken job to bring down the cost of everything and to bring back the peace of mind! If AH HUN SEN government can’t do the fucken job and let someone else do the fucken job! It is simple as that!
This issue is about the life of dirt poor Cambodian people who are struggling to make a living! Keep the damn politic and propaganda aside okay!
