Government Pulls Plug on Radio Station [-Censoring the free press ahead of the election?]

The government has shut down a radio station in Kratie province, in what critics call a censoring of free press.

The station, Angkor Rotha, was shut down Wednesday after broadcasting only 13 days, said owner Keo Chan Rotha.

The station had sold several broadcasting spots to political parties competing in July’s general election, he said.

“I ask the government for my radio to be broadcast again, because I want Cambodian to have more free information from all [political] parties,” he said.

Human Rights Party Vice President Keo Remy called the shuttering of the station a violation of free expression and an attempt to “shut up” voices of democracy.

Information Minister Khieu Kanharith said the radio station had “made the mistake of breaking the license contract and looking down on the information official in Kratie province.”

A similar radio station in Siem Reap province was still running, he added.

    Dear KI-media friends,

I am one of Angkor Ratha's listeners in Siem Reap. I like this Radio Station and listen to its program almost everyday.

Angkor Ratha is a very good radio station, which broadcasts broad news of national and international situation. It is my favorite because of its many good programs and un-bias news to its listeners.

I think it is very suited for the listeners who need accurate information and un-bias broadcasting.

For listeners who loves freedom of expression, accurate news of up-to-date situations and program of democratic voice, Angkor Ratha is the best choice among the radio stations in Siem Reap.

I always wish this radio developped and added more program in every province in Cambodia so that people of all provinces could have opportunity to listen to news from this radio, in addition to the news from mere govenment and govenment-alined radios.

I was very happy to hear that Angkor Rotha added one more station in Kratie pronvice. I positively hoped that Kratie people would enjoy its program and hot news.

Now, I am very regretful that this radio has been shutted down by the govenment recently.

The shutting-down of Angkor Ratha Radio Station in Kratie province clearly means that the govenment is trying to muffle the freedom of free press and the voices of democracy in Cambodia.

The govenment led by the CPP is preventing the people from free infomation, information from other parties ahead of the up-coming national election in July.

I dare say that the current govenment of Cambodia is not good. I have also listened to many programs of the govenment and govenment-alined radios. They broadcast news which is bias to CPP only. Almost all radio stations in Cambodia are in favour of the rulling govenment and they always transmit the news of Hun Sen and CPP members going to provinces to meet people and give them scarves, sarongs etc. They broadcast the rulling party's activities.

I also listened to Editorials of Bayon, Apsara, 98MHz,103 MHz Radios. They, especially Bayon & Apsara Radios, fiercely attacked Sam Rainsy party, Human Right party. Why do these radios not made a mistake of breaking the license contract with the govenment?

Therefore, in the name of one listener of Angkor Ratha Radio, i would like to appeal to all Khmer Democratic Poeple be united and persistently urge through direct or indirectly ways for the re-opening of this radio for the sake of our people freedom and the country's interest.

Thank you and hope you will kindly cooperate.

    With best regards,

One listener of Angkor Ratha Radio

Any radio station that is against the government is being shut down because it aired the truth. I agree with you One Listener, It could be worst....... detained.
