US donates military trucks to Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — The United States will deliver 31 used trucks to Cambodia, its first direct supply of military hardware there since Washington lifted an embargo three years ago.

The U.S. Embassy said Friday that the 31 GMC cargo truckspart of a group of 60 the U.S. military has agreed to give to Cambodia — will be handed over at a ceremony Monday.

The U.S. halted military assistance to Cambodia following a 1997 coup in which Hun Sen grabbed full power after ousting his co-premier, Prince Norodom Ranariddh. Hun Sen remains prime minister.

In August 2005, President Bush waived the ban, citing Phnom Penh's agreement to exempt Americans in Cambodia from prosecution by the Netherlands-based International Criminal Court.

Since direct military ties between the two countries were restored in 2006, the U.S. has pledged nearly $3.2 million in military aid to Cambodia, the embassy said in a statement.

It said the 31 trucks are "the first deliverables" under a U.S. program for "assisting Cambodia in its efforts to improve" its border security, mobility and peacekeeping operations.

It added that the U.S. military is spending $413,000 on processing, packaging and shipping all 60 vehicles — "excess defense articles no longer needed by the U.S. armed forces."

Let use the trucks to protect our borders, and not abuse them to protect the interest of any political party. Hope these tools will be used the way they are intended to be used--protect the very intrests of the people and nation of Cambodia. Thanks to Uncle Sam.

if help, help in the name of friendship. but stop labeling cambodia as a beggar country or something along that line. i don't think cambodia like to beg, however due to misfortunate circumstances in its past history, it just need some help to get back on its feet. that's all. but to label cambodia as beggar is not fair and not right. otherwise stop handing stuff to us. sorry, also, cambodia can not trade its land or sovereignty for your generosity as the majority of our khmer people don't want that and cannot allow that to happen. this goes with any country on the planet. i say this because it seems historically cambodia did this with vietnam and thailand for their help or assistance then traded in land or allowing illegals to come live in cambodia, then they would claim khmer land for vietnam or thailand in this way. i don't think cambodia want to do that again in our history to come. if anything, it would be the opposite of that which mean we want all of our loss land back, not the other way around. thank you. and god bless cambodia.

2:24, you are on the right track. The problem is you are ignoring the current fact. That is Cambodia is still divided and each side will give land rights its foreign allied in exchange for their help. Nothing has changed, dude.

5:03am, it's a crime or a traitor to do that. people like that should get a death sentence for saling or giving away khmer land to foreigners for exchange of whatever. i mean, i'm not being xenophobic or anything, just a reasonable person who love cambodia and want to maintain cambodia. i don't think it's a question of xenophobia; exchanging your country for a personal favor is not how it works around the world. why is cambodia special in that respect? i think it's just wishful thinking for someone here for their political gain only. however, it's not even funny! two wrongs don't make it right, never!!!

I hope they don't misused the truck to deport Ah Khmer-Yuon back to Vietnam. Those idiots can walk back because we don't want to waste our budget on fuel or worn out our trucks on criminals.

The Vietcong are dying to coexist with the Khmer people so bad that they have no choice except to recognize the existence of the Khmer people in Khmer Kampuchea Krom as the Khmer-Youn. I am very glad that this is the very first time that the Vietcong dare to come out in public and declare the existence of the Khmer people in Vietname who had been living on their ancestral homeland for century way before the Vietcong government took control of Khmer Kampuchea Krom after defeating the French colonial master!

Enough is said already! Now it is time for the Vietcong government to recognize a free independent Khmer Krom nation!

  18. I do not know if this move was for marketing purposes, or just came from the heart, but still well done. Old trucks contributing is better than throwing them away. there are poor people in the world would be glad to receive any help potential ...
