CIVIL society groups on Monday criticised the government for not appealing to the United Nations for help in its ongoing standoff with Thailand over disputed territory along the border.
Chea Mony, president of the Free Trade Union (FTU), said that if the government had complained to the UN earlier and stuck to their complaint, there would not have been any Cambodians killed over the issue.
At least thee Cambodian soldiers are dead after clashes last week with Thai troops on the border near Preah Vihear temple.
"Despite the fact that both sides sustained injuries of a similar magnitude, we are still filled with regret for the loss of our soldiers," he said.
"If the government had used the UN to solve this problem, there would be no dead soldiers," Chea Mony added.
An unknown number of Thai casualties were also inflicted.
Yong Kim Eng, president of the People's Center for Development and Peace, said Monday the government's efforts to resolve the dispute were muddled.
"At one moment, they say they want to complain to the UN. At the next, they don't," he said.
Early on in the three-month standoff, Cambodia threatened to file a formal complaint with the UN Security Council, but quickly backed down.
Council of Ministers spokesman Phay Siphan said Monday that the UN and several "big countries" had encouraged Cambodia to choose negotiations.
"We have already written to the UN and sent information to Asean and Unesco. If these measures don't work, we will find another way," he said.

It is the thailande which is completely responsible for this armed conflict and not Cambodia!
ReplyDeleteIt is the thailande which created this situation.
In the bilateral negotiation, we answer an aggression thais.
In a multilateral negotiation, we look for solutions of the borders contestting.
It is not the same thing in terms of result to obtain!
Ah jo dumb din hun sen has an erratic behavior. One day he wanted to make war october 14, 2008 and the next day october 15, 2008, after three cabodian soldier died,he wanted to make peace. We hope one day he wants to be the next sadam hun sen for crime against humanity. Hun sen and his mafia government and vietnam goverment have killed so many cambodian people.
ReplyDeleteHun sen hates and rudes to U.N representatives in cambodia because the U.N criticizing his government for not respecting the human right and follow the rule of law.
Now we have border conflict with thailand. Thai government know that they are totally wrong for occupying on khmer's land at preah vihear. But there are three reasons for thai government to prolong this conflict and hope end result will be in thailand favor. 1) Thailand know that the U.N will not side with hun sen because he insult, hate and rude to the U.N.
2) Thai knows that hun sen has given a larg part of cambodia to vietnamese along the border. Thai
wants the same treatment from hun sen. 3) Hun sen government is a corruptted government and thai hope thai can make a deal with hun sen in thai's favior.
I believe both side of people do not want this kind of war,The Government of both side need to brake the curse. To stop the past to repeat ifself. The whole world NOW in inflation and climates change.
ReplyDeleteI believe we all need to find the solution be prepare for unknown nature disaster for around the globe,Now every Country need to focus of created food for people to eat.Not created WAR,We are going to die someday of old age.
