Acid Attack Film Debuts in Portland

By Men Kimseng, VOA Khmer
Original report from Washington
20 August 2009

VOA Khmer was not able to reach Khoun Sophal, the wife of Svay Sitha, to check on her involvement in the case. Sources say she is living a normal life with Svay Sitha, who has now been promoted to secretary of state.
“Finding Face,” which examines the life of Tat Marina, a karaoke star who was terribly disfigured and nearly killed in an acid attack, will show in Portland on Sunday.

Meanwhile, members of her family have gone into hiding under the protection of UNHCR, for fear of reprisals.

Tat Marina was the mistress of a powerful official, whose wife is suspected behind the attack. Acid attacks are a common phenomenon in post-war Cambodia.

The film is narrated by Tat Marina herself, making it sound as though she is telling her story to the audience, said the filmmaker, Sky Fitzgerald.

The film was produced by SpinFilm, and organizers hope Portland’s Whitsell Auditorium screening will see thousands of attendees, including US representatives. The screening will be followed by a question-answer session with Tat Marina.

“It is my belief that it is a fundamental human right, that one has a chance to speak their mind to tell their story and not be silenced by others because simply they are in a more powerful position in a particular country,” Fitzgerald said. “So I became very committed to ensure that [Marina’s] family had an outlet in a way that they hadn’t for a very long time.”

Tat Marina was doused with nitric acid in December 1999 while feeding porridge to her niece at a market in Phnom Penh. The film demonstrates that Tat Marina had a secret affair with Svay Sitha, who was then an undersecretary of state at the powerful Council of Ministers.

“When Marina was wounded, we were pressured and threatened not to file a complaint,” said the victim’s older sister, Tat Pov Rachana, speaking to VOA Khmer by phone while in hiding. “We’ve lived in pain for nine or 10 years now.”

Eight of Tat Marina’s family, including four children, fled Cambodia the day before the film was premiered, at a human rights film festival in Geneva in March.

“I also miss my country, but the suffering and injustice clouding over my family makes us unable to stand it any longer,” Tat Pov Rachana said, sobbing.

Meanwhile, police officials in the family’s neighborhood said they were surprised the family had fled.

“They left without informing us, and I don’t even know at which location they lived,” said Yin San, police inspector of January 7 district.

The family did not go to the police for protection as the film debuted.

“They came to Licadho and other organizations for their protection and safety,” Om Sam Ath, chief investigator for Licadho, told VOA Khmer Monday. “They said they cannot go on living in Cambodia, due to a film about their true life and Marina’s and fear of threats and repression.”

VOA Khmer was not able to reach Khoun Sophal, the wife of Svay Sitha, to check on her involvement in the case. Sources say she is living a normal life with Svay Sitha, who has now been promoted to secretary of state.

Reached by phone, Svay Sitha declined to comment, and an aid said he did not want to remember the incident.

Fitzgerald said he plans to have the documentary shown in many states and on television in the US. He hopes to screen it in Cambodia but is not sure if officials will allow it. The next step is to put the film on DVD format and distribute it in Cambodia.

    ACID ATTACK ON TAT MARINA
Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen Khmer Rouge Regime had committed acid attack.
"On December 5, 1999, Tat Marina, age 16, was severely disfigured in an acid attack in Phnom Penh. The attack was allegedly committed by Khun Sophal, the wife of a senior government official, Svay Sitha, because she was angry her husband had a sexual relationship with Tat Marina. Neither Khun Sophal nor those suspected of being her accomplices in the attack were brought to justice. Intense media publicity compelled the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to issue an arrest warrant for Khun Sophal for attempted murder, but the police claimed that they could not locate her, although journalists reported that she was living at home as usual."

TORTURE AND MURDER ON PRAK SITHA WHILE IN CUSTODY BY MISNISTRY OF INTERIOR OFFICIAL
Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen Khmer Rouge Regime had committed torture and murder.
"On the night of January 16, 2003, a street youth named Prak Sitha was beaten to death at the Ministry of Interior (MOI) headquarters after he was arrested and detained by off-duty MOI officers on suspicion of theft. His body - bearing numerous injuries to the head, torso, arms, and legs - was dumped at a Phnom Penh pagoda the following morning by ministry officers, in violation of police regulations regarding deaths in custody. No criminal charges were filed in connection with this death. In December 2004, the case was cited by the UN secretary-general's special representative for human rights in Cambodia - who stated that Prak Sitha died at the ministry "following beatings by a known police officer" - as an example of a "consistent and continuing pattern of impunity" in Cambodia."

Mean Sokchea was detained by the police overnight but was then released, allegedly after intervention by Hing Bun Heang. Put Samphor's family received US$2,700 from Mean Sokchea, and the police told them that their daughter was shot while authorities were chasing robbers."

You are an absolutely right acid attacks are a common occurrence in Cambodia mostly happened to many cases especially the second wife or other abuse and by jalousie. Perhaps you or the young generation knew that DY SAVETH a former famous Khmer movies actress she had an acid attack as well, this happened since the latest 1968. She immediately went to Japan for the operation; after she got well recuperated her first film came earliest 1970 as ‘Adventured Life’. I hope everyone know about this.

(Thos who write long sentence like a book I won’t have time to read it)

it's probably in the culture of asian people. why the political group of people too quick to jump to the conclusion thinking that it only happens now in cambodia today when in fact it has happened all the time even in the old regimes? i don't understand people using politics, here!

no wonder gov't say they are using misinformation, and we all know this, nobody has to tell us, we knew it; it's all politics! only america is the best country on the planet, the land of god, that is.

Acid attack is not savagely inhumane and must face strong legal action. It is ridiculous to see the culprit is immune to law enforcement. How long will the this immunity last? Who lets devils out?

When comes to love, it does not matter who is who, people are not God. They will fight to keep their men or women. Every country is not so difference but Cambodia now also in Thailand, threwing acid is like a routine daily life for them.

In America some men or women killed their spouses, and some like this astronaut woman named Nowak wore diaper and drove for 900 miles non-stop to confront another woman who loves the man she loves; and Nowak was a married woman. Can you believe it?

    Look at her photo.

    2:21 AM,

The society and the people of her environement failed Tat Marina. She was only 16 yeras at the time, and her family used her as a sex baiting to become famous and rich.

Her own mother even bragged that Marina was too beautiful that's why she received the bap, even she was not.

And you 2:21 AM claimed she would be Miss Cambodia or Universe if she were to compete. Those flattery destroyed her life.

The world has more than 3 billion women and millions are beautiful every each few seconds in somewhere around the corner of the planet.

If Tat Marina was living in a good society where education is a primary subject not an option, she may be now a Doctor or Dentist or professional woman already.

Her family members and the people around her are very sick people and they are to blame for Tat Marina's fate. They used her as the sex baiting.

God Damn your people who destroyed her life.
