Thailand warns against Cambodian home for fugitive ex-premier Thaksin

Bangkok - Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra risks being extradited back to Thailand if he takes up an offer of a home in Cambodia, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban warned Thursday. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, often at loggerheads with the Thai government, on Wednesday offered shelter to Thaksin, who is living in self-imposed exile to avoid a two-year jail term at home for abuse of power.

The surprise invitation came two days before the start in Thailand of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Thailand, to which both Thailand and Cambodia belong.

About 18,000 soldiers and police have been deployed to protect the 16 leaders attending from protestors loyal to the populist Thaksin. A summit in April had to be cancelled when pro-Thaksin demonstrators broke into the venue.

Thaksin, overthrown in a bloodless military coup in September 2006, is loathed by much of the Thai elite and middle class, but his populist economic policies have given him a big following among the poor. His critics have accused him of seeking to become an authoritarian leader, a label often also applied to Hun Sen.

Hun Sen praised Thaksin, a former telecommunications tycoon, as a "great friend" and a victim of unfair politics who deserved a respectable home.

Hun Sen made the remarks at a meeting with veteran Thai politician and former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyuth, a senior member of Thaksin's Puea Thai Party.

Suthep said the meeting was "purely aimed at creating a good image for the deposed premier," the Bangkok Post reported Thursday.

Diplomats gearing up to attend the three-day ASEAN summit noted how the timing of the offer served to remind everyone that Thaksin still considers himself a major political figure three years after his ouster.

The secretary general of the Thai Foreign Ministry, Chawanont Indarakomalsut, played down fears that the former prime minister might find lodgings in a neighbouring country. He told the Post that it was hard to imagine Hun Sen damaging relations with Thailand, even if Thaksin was a friend.

I say, Hun Sen made a good move. Obviously, it’s one way to stop Thais from steals Khmer’s land. Hun Sen knows Thailand can’t invade Cambodia and they never can, why not threw some punches to see where they scream louder.

First Mr.Hun Sen know that there are only about 9 millions people in Bangkok. The rest are Tacksin's people. Beside that what did Abhisit's government do beside agetating Cambodian people? Trade sucks. Tourist sucks. Preash Vihear issue sucks. Cambodian people who live in Thailand got treated like shit. For Mr. Abhisit is nothing for Cambodia, but pretty face. So which one he should go? Keep taking shit from Abhisit? and abandon a good friend? You wouldn't 6:14pm

Also, if you worry about the future monachy in Thailand, ask your own people. We have our own monarchy and who is the strongest King's Sihamoni supporter? and who has a better relation with the King father and China? It's certainly not the Sam Rainsey's party or at least most of his supporters. That's putting in an unsure path which The UN had established for Cambodia back in 1993. So you deside and advice Mr. Tacksin of what to do, should he again raises to power and Good luck! Please remember, if you want to be safe and happy, other around you should also be safe and happy and not just the 9 millions people in Bangkok or the King and you Abhisit's litlle man.

Another word do your politic and leave the monarchy alone! To be faired, Tacksin and Abhisit have the same chance to run Thailand and we have the right to choose a better one. The one that will win, is the one with majority of the people. Hard to swallow? ask us. Been there and done that.

Preah Vihear issue alone had turned Royalty's blood of Cambodia and Thailand to water. It got King Sihanouk kissing up to Vietnam and to China and it brought hell to us, but that is another matter and another day to discus. What matter most is now. You keep agitating us about everything else including Preah Vihear, the Tacksin will win. It's simple as that. Blaim it on yourself for not seeing it's coming.

Also remember: The Aphaivong's family, the Japaneese sided with Thailand during the WWII and who got Bhumibol's family out of trouble? Wasn't it the Democratic party leading by Aphaivong's son and his men? You need to open your eyes up a little bigger. Regardless of what you think of Khuang Aphaivong, He is Chhum Aphaivong's son. He has Khmer blood. Even in Death, he Knows, he has a lot of love from us. It just got burrying underneath of his faked skin for the time being. See you never? May be not.

So far it's been a losing game for current Thai government to stand any grounds on the issues between Cambodia and Thailand not to mention the current Thai government has no creditability in the first place to even run Thailand. Any democratic government in the world should be powered by votes, not coups as the Abishit government did. Cambodia do not want to bicker with Thailand. When we fight no one wins. We just want to live in peace and move on with our lives but why Thailand continues to bullying Cambodia? and dragging their feet solving issues with Cambodia? Peace can only be found with equality and fairness... Please do your nation a favor and tell your government to do just that with Cambodia... because we are sick and tire for fights and stalemates.

Every dog has its day! The Thai had sheltered and did business with a bunch of Khmer Rough leaders, including Pol Pot, for years during the 80's and 90's. Now they just got a tast of its own medicine and they don't like it. Too bad! Bravo Mr. Hun Sen.

These two people have a lot in common. They both like to run away when the situation goes bad. Hun Sen ran to Vietnam when he lost the election one time. He will probably run away again when there is no more money to be made in Cambodia. In order to gain support in the future, he let his thugs do whatever they want.

PM Abhisit - you shoot yourself in the foot. You don't want to resolve Preah Vihear dispute and continue to harass us. Now, it's payback time!

Good move PM Hun Sen. Thaksin will return to power because he has the support of the rural/mass population.

It is a good idea to bring rich people to live in Cambodia, because they bring in riches to Cambodia and good for our economy.

Thaksin was convicted by politcal motivated, so Hun Sen can give Mr. Thacksin a political asylum in Cambodia, so the government of Cambodia don't have to extradite him back to Thailand.

6:54 PM, are you sure Khmer lost those land to our neighbors from the wars? I thought our King ta and King ta-tuot gave those lands them. Please mad at the right person. You see, we lost our land to Siam because our King ta-tuot let them Siam people live there, later they separated themselves from Khmer and then created their own country. We lost three provinces to Laos because our King ta-tuot wants to marry one of their princess. And we lost some land to Youn because our King ta let them Vietcong use it and later live there and now it’s their land. None of them us a single bullet for the so called lost land. How can you lost something when you gave it away.

Now, we just have to tell our current leader not to give out anymore land to our neighbors.

I am not 6:54PM, but just want to add some comment.

Frankly, I would never believe any Khmer king or leader has given our land away to the neighbours. This is simply a myth or propaganda made by our neighbours who want us to believe that they did not steal our lands. They want us to blame our kings, leaders, ancestors or ourselves for the lost lands.

Does anyone realy believe that a ruler, a king would willingly give his land a way? Those neighbours took the land from us by force when we could not defend it. To legitimize their actions, those neighbours have made up the stories that our kings, rulers, ...etc give the land away because of this or that.

Have you visited South Vietnam recently? Yuons told tourists that a Khmer king gave the land to them because he was in love with a vietnamese princess. Can any Khmer believe that?

My version of this is that Khmer king was not in position to defend our southern territory because of other wars with Thailand or was out numbered by Yuon army, and to show to Khmer peole that the King gave teh land to them, the yuon emperor made told our king to marry with one of his daughter.

Fellow Khmers, please NEVER think that our king or ruler give away our lands. It is a pure myth or propanda by our neighbours.
They took the lands from us by force or because they knew we could not defend it. That is the truth!

About the history for Cambodia lost the land to Vietnam and Siam.
Many formal letter from Khmer king to talk about interior war between the opposite strongly Khmer group. To ask neigbor kingdom to help them to fight with anothers.
In Thailand now historic story are very open for newly evidence were discover and many source from outside country were used to share for more understanding "what is happen in the past?" In Suvanaphumi region we have same root history we should learn to know each others. If we can thinks like this we are evoluted like the tiny frog to live outside the earth.

    1:01 AM,
I learnt Khmer history from Elementary to High School in Cambodia and I inclined to believe your thought that Khmer lost land to our neighbors as the result of the war and not the king gave our land voluntary to our neighbors. From what I have learnt in history division between Khmers and Khmers mosly involving the sons of the kings who want to be crowned as king upon their father death fighting each other for the position. When one lost the fight he went to Siam for help. After winning the throne with Siam's help, the king, in gratitude for Siam help gave some part of the land to Siam. The losing party, on the hand, went to Viets for help. When the Viets were successful in winning the crown for Khmer prince, the new king would need to cede some Khmer land to the Viets. And the cycle keep going and going from one Khmer dynasty to another. Part of Khmer history is Chey Chetha II who was married to the daughter of Viet's King that resulted in the loss of big chunk of Khmer land to the Viets. Now history repeat itself. In 1978, Hun Sen, former Khmer Rouge (KR)who broke away from KR to save his skin, went to Viets for help and it was Viet's help that brought Hun Sen to power and he is in power for almost thirty years now. It must be naitive to think that the Viets do not get anyting in return and it must be crazy to think Cambodia is independent from the Viets.
