The IRI did it again: Results of the “infamous” IRI survey revealed by Cambodia's Strongman ... not by the IRI

Hun Xen: The IRI survey said that we are moving in the right direction - one step forward, 10 steps back!

IRI: Increasing support for Hun Xen’s government

The US-based International Republican Institute (IRI) released its survey indicating that the Cambodian government led by the current ruling CPP party is moving in the right direction. Support for the popularity of the CPP government has increased up to 79%. However, the IRI survey was criticized by the SRP as being imperfect.

The IRI conducted its survey between 31 July to 26 August 2009. The results of the survey were not made available by the IRI itself, but it was publicly announced by Hun Xen in the morning of 12 January 2009 instead.

During a ceremony for the distribution of diplomas to students in Phnom Penh, Hun Xen pulled out a paper showing the results of the IRI survey to read. He indicated that the IRI’s survey question was: “Is the leadership of the Cambodian government moving in the right or wrong direction.” The results indicated 79% of the people surveyed indicated that the government is moving in the right direction.

The survey results surprised Hun Xen when the survey question was: Will you vote for the CPP in any election? Hun Xen indicated that the result indicated that 53% are certain that they will vote for the CPP. This number reflects a full 1% increase from last year’s IRI survey.

Hun Xen claimed that the IRI had already revealed its survey results to all parties that hold seats at the National Assembly, including the CPP and Funcinpec.

The current support for the government stems from the fact the government built roads, schools, healthcare centers, pagodas, bridges and the living condition has improved due to water irrigation, electricity and water, peace in the country and good business climate.

Nevertheless, the survey conducted by the IRI – which, in the past, used to be close to the SRP and human rights and democratic NGOs in Cambodia – was criticized by Yim Sovann, the SRP spokesman, of being imperfect. Yim Sovann explained that the survey was conducted under a climate of repression, of silencing the freedom of expression, of arrest made against journalists, of lifting the immunity of MPs, and the arrest and jailing citizens involved in land dispute.

Is IRI stupid, or SRP was not smart enough to keep IRI as a friend?

The result of IRI survey also shows the US foreign policy's direction, since everybody know IRI is a US thinktank heavily politicized by the US Administration.

Opposition parties must awake that the US is not always your close friend, so the next time you criticize the government don't take US as your benchmark.

Oil will be depleated in 30-50 years at most!

Any small countries with oil field, there will be war. Big countries need them more according to their logic thinking.

US politicians are bought by the bankers to do their bidding. Even though we may go through the process of democracy of voting, but the reality is: Money answers all things.

Look at all the bail outs of failed banks-pay back from Obama for electing him as the president of Russia, not United States. He is a Communist to the core.

I bet there is not much different in Cambodian politic. Hun Sen is paid by the money man. World Bank is a crooked thief set up to rob countries of their resources. They take $200 dollars worth of goods and give back $10 dollars. That's how they rob countries that do business with them.

Hun Sen's government is in the right way? Can anyone draw a cartoon of eviction, killing, persecution and violation of Hun Sen's government to the people with the title of Government is in the right way and I will vote for it next election. I think this cartoon will be big joke.

Cambodia is still a Stone Age country and dirt poor Cambodian people still live on $1 a day and majority still live below poverty line according to international standard.

How is it possible that Cambodia experience so much economic growth and majority still remain dirt poor?

Cambodia is the land of contradiction!

The perception that IRI is part of US administration is not true.IRI is funded by and mouthpiece for Republican party outside US.

Current administration is much of Democratic Party,go figure. Also Opposition party of Cambodia seems to embrace US conservatism and Republican politicians like Joe Cao,a freshman US House Representative from Louisiana, who visited Hun Sen on 7 January celebration.

Even some people still poor, majority of Cambodian are now enjoy peace and prosperity than any regime in the last few hundreds year of Cambodian history.

So those who keep rejecting the survey result that is not to their liking are denying fact and reality. When you cannot accept fact, then you cannot think logically, that is the reason that you will fail, one time after another, no matter if you have good intention or not. You need to accept the fact and then plan your action base on the fact and the reality.

One of them found to be Nigery.
Well. if Nigerian were not asked if you are having a proper medical care, social benefits, security, jobs, then the result will be YES, We are Happy

How we should interpret IRI survey findings? Are they biased against the opposition? I think that we can only say something about how the questions were asked? But please not questions about public opinions. There are 14M Cambodians in the country and not all of them are aware of what happened in every day life in the country. Actually not all of them are as educated as members of the opposition party (!) . Rather the opposition party (or parties) representatives should be asking them selves what wrong with them? And what they should do to correct the people’s perception of the country politics. It is like your face in the mirrors. It is up to the opposition to like it or not. If I don’t like my hair cut now, I will ask for something else next time I will go to the barber. Breaking the glass would not do anything good. Keep it cool and try to find a way to unite the oppositions and have a common and sound policy and winning platform for the next election. Three more years to go is a pretty long time in politic.

the iri is a crap's survey, becuz they compared year zero(1979) till today, cambodia have been made alot progress in urbanisation in phnom penh and siem riep, plus the human right protection to the illegal immigrants. but the main problem was getting from bad the worst since last 3 years when hunsen has sold khmer lands to foreign investment. u can see in the picture ah-hun and ah-sim, they'r mocking about survey, becuz the result was completly opposited to what the reality in cambodia.

Yes...these dirt poor Cambodian will have to say to everything the IRI otherwise AH HUN SEN will deport or put them in jail.

These days dirt poor Cambodian can't say anything beside yes Sir! yes Sir! yes Sir as if their freedom of expression haven't taken away from them already!

This is just a survey! And survey can be bias as well and by taking the survey only in the heavily populated pro-CPP area and the outcome is predictable!

Having medical cares, decent paying jobs, and entitle to certain social benefits are not to say people have to give up freedom to a government, but the certain basic needs that the government should provide as people are paying taxes.
without these basic needs, then there is no regualr and consistent social network safety to help those needs. But those needy will depend on handout occasionally by a few riches.

Good job IRI. We will work with your boss in DC to see if the intent of this survey was genuine otherwise your in trouble by cheating khmers.

Hun Sen whispered to Chea Sim. When will we ready to strike? We can strike when Kasit encroach us another step into our soil.

The property itself is located close to the lake where there are plenty of fishes to catch. Last night I and my brother-in-law caught about 15 fishes weight an average of 10 pounds/each. If you are Cambodian and your hobby is fishing you are welcome to join the club.

The results of survey are just a photographic picture at the time of survey. But people change, circumstances change.
On the other hand, Sihanouk had 80-90% of support, until ...
At the Khmer Rouge of Pol Pot ruling era, if there was any survey, it might have 90-99% of support.
If you survey people under life threat, you get 100% support.
So 79% of support for HS regime is very low score, indeed.
