Cambodia Bans Marriage to Korean Men

Mar. 22, 2010
The Chosun Ilbo (South Korea)

The Cambodian government has decided to temporarily forbid marriages between Cambodian women and Korean men to curb the mail-order bride business. Phnom Penh says Korean men often fail to observe the month-long consideration period for which they are required to stay in Cambodia to undergo an interview and a review of documents.

A Korean government source on Friday said the Cambodian government informed the Korean Embassy in Phnom Penh of the ban in an official letter on March 5.

The measure was taken after a woman was arrested for lining up no fewer than 25 Cambodian girls as potential brides for a Korean man to choose from, according to the source.

The Korean Embassy suspended receipt of applications for consular international marriage certificates on March 8, and will also temporarily suspend a settlement support program for immigrant spouses from Cambodia on April 1.

"International marriages should occur after free dating and the couples should decide on their own which country to live in after marriage. But Koreans, who account for 60 percent of international marriages in Cambodia, mostly meet Cambodian women through matchmakers," a government official said.

The arrest of the woman prompted the Cambodian government to enforce the ban amid deteriorating sentiment about Koreans among locals, he added.

Cambodian girls deserve their dignity as human being on the earth, they are not goods for Korean men to stand in queu for the selection to be Korean men. We have heard of the accounts of Cambodian girls who married with such men, reported ill-treated with, degrading, and committed violence on the girls. I appeal for the international organization to watch these cases in South Korea, if found these incidents, please file the case to the court for the justice of the woment as result of the ill treatment. Congratulate the ban of the government and even welcome for the longer term ban marriage with South Korean guys.

I just feel pity for these dirt poor Cambodian women! It takes at least one to three generation for most people (men or women) to build up wealth...and the way AH HUN SEN running Cambodia right now and it will take dirt poor Cambodian people forever build up wealth.

Now dirt poor Cambodian women are resorting to marry some foreign con artists and convicts hoping to for a better life but at the end only the fucken nightmare awaited them!

These days AH HUN SEN is too busy building wealth for himself not for the nation! This is the result!

The GRC has to stop quickly the economic policy of the wild capitalism. This economic policy of predation makes a lot of devastation in the Khmer society since it is it was established in Cambodia. Exemptions of taxes for foreign companies, sales Khmer’s land and khmer’s natural resources to the rich foreign, sales Khmer’s nationality to foreigners, sales girls Khmer to foreigners, expulsion the poors and peasants from their land,...

The most visible and the most immediate devastating social consequences of this policy of
the wild capitalism are: the explosion of the Corruption, social injustice, social inequalities are growing, the rich became more and more rich and the poor get poorer , there is less and less jobs, work less and less well paid, No houses, no land to cultivate.
Young people who leave school have no work but the cost of living does not stop increasing ... damage done to the environment and Khmer’s social structures.

The eviction of peasants from their land, violence against the poor and the weak by the rich and powerful people, rising crime, drugs, human trafficking, prostitution, all these are the symptoms of sick society.

Economic development and political democracy, what that's for, if people have no means to take advantage of this development and this democracy? Only a minority of people take advantage of this political and social system?

These are not the police and police repression that will scare and silence people when the people are desperate and will revolt against injustice and misery.

When the peasants and the poor more and more refuse injustice, despair, abuse of authority, organized politically to defend themselves against police repression and to fight against the police and revolt against the authorities.

    Political power becomes unpopular.
The unpopular political power which can maintain itself in power by repression and violence on the people in this case becomes a dictatorship and then his days will be counted.

It is necessary to change quickly this economic policies of predation when is still time.

Hay 8:57 pm - in order to build the country - the leader need a lot of cooperation and those that can perform the country policy. Event HS still needs a lot of people to support him. That does not meant just the one around him that drain resources from the Khmer people. You Know that HS know this, thus, he also need those that can help produce Khmer's wealth....don't speak with anger - it only anger return back back to you.
