Court Delays Verdict To Avoid Protest Violence

A judge postponed a decision in a land case to prevent a repeat conflict between villagers and police, as protesters burned effigies in front of the provincial court Friday.

The court is hearing a dispute over 65 hectares of land in Kampong Speu province’s Oudong district, where villagers say a Taiwanese company is taking over property they claim to have owned for more than 20 years.

Judge Keo Mony said Friday the court would delay its decision, “to avoid clashes between authorities and villagers like yesterday.”

Twelve police and 13 villagers were injured in Thursday’s confrontation, when police sought to break up an assembly of protesters, using electric batons and water canons. Sun Bun Chhoun, a 49-year-old representative of the 88 families in the case, said villagers will protest the court until they get their land back.

Protesters burnt effigies in front of the court Friday, he said, to prevent the judge from issuing a verdict “without thinking.”

Investigators for the rights group Adhoc are monitoring the protests daily, an official of the group said.

Ky Dara, a representative of the Taiwanese company, said the protesters were not the rightful owners of the land, which the company purchased in 2000 to run a paper factory.

The judge made a rightful decision. They will resolve these issues in a peaceful manners. For the next election, who will these villagers vote for? That's is the question! I hope these villages will learn a lesson from this. You need to have some kinds of document to show that you are land owners.

Mass Protest against the dictator Hun Sen is the only solution to free Cambodia from the bad foreigners: the Vietcongs, the Chinese, Koreans, etc.

There are two types of foreigners: the good ones such as the Japanese, the UN, the Westerners, etc. who come to help building Cambodia a better place; while the bad foreigners such as the Vietcongs, the Chinese, the Koreans, the Thais are in Cambodia to steal from Khmer and oppress Khmer.

The Dictator Hun Sen regime only favors the bad foreigners, because they bring a lot of $$$ to Hun Sen and his gangs.

That is what PM Hun Sen want to see. he canceled proudly the land title registration project of World Bank and left poor people without proper land document, so that it is easy to evict the poor from their land.

Do you think the Westerners, the UN and the Japaneses are good foreigners? These bastards are just as bad as Vietcongs, Chinese Korans and Siems. They're all money suckers. They will suck everything you have! Especially the white men, they are the worst! The UN? don't go there! Were they the ones who brought HIV/AID to Cambodian?

10:20 What really happened was that the registration period was open for almost 10 years from the passage of the first land law by the National Assembly through the 2002 Land Law, but, even then, the 2002 land law allowed those who didn't have the 5 year but only part of it to apply for Title of Possession up to when the land management plan for that particular area was finalized.

    9:51AM,
You think you know about Cambodia. But really you know so little. Or you just simply speack on behalf of the unethical government. Too bad they don't even paying you for it. IDIOT...

In order for people to do paper work, documentation process in Cambodia people must bribe officials. Then the officials bribes other officials on and on. If you don't bribe enough, things will not be done or done incorrectly.

However, although them villagers have documentation do you really think the government officials honor it? I don't think so.... these corrupted officials only see dollars!

Look at Mr. Sam Rainsy case. The polls has been map and was done and consult by international experts with the most current technologies available. Hun Sen and his corrupted officials keep denying the facts although they know it is the truth.

And you really think the villagers paper documentations will stop them corrupted governmen doing what they wants? I don't think so....

Look at this poor people only have slingshot, rocks, sticks and stone to battle against AK-47. I hate Cambodian government!

People need to rise up the evil dictator, Hun Sen. Don't just sit and cry. Act as the people in Kompong Speu did with the sling shot, stone, axes, knife, gun, etc... together men and women.

As one comment said "If they take away your property and build new one, let burn it down at night to rubbish". Keep burning down the illegal land or property grabbing from the people. I bet they won't build it again.

Or kill whoever involve in attacking you or arrest you. Get revenge. If they play with the hard ball, play with the hard ball back.
