Court officials indicated that the Phnom Penh municipal court has started conducting its investigation on the 2 criminal accusations leveled against opposition leader Sam Rainsy by the government lawyer last month. Sok Roeun, the deputy prosecutor of the court, said on Thursday that the investigation was initiated following the court rejection for a delay for Sam Rainsy to provide his clarification on Tuesday. Sok Roeun added: “Since this case in under court investigation, we need to have lawyers from both sides provide additional proofs for the court to reflect and then we can provide a judgment.” Opposition leader Sam Rainsy was sued by Ky Tech, the government lawyer, for falsification of public documents and distribution of false information. The lawsuit came after Sam Rainsy published maps and documents claiming “Irrefutable Proof of Vietnamese Encroachment inside Cambodian Territory in Chantrea District, Svay Rieng province.” If the court finds Sam Rainsy guilty of the charges leveled against him, he could face up to 18 years in jail sentence.
