Land Demonstrators Briefly Close Main Road

By Heng Reaksmey, VOA Khmer
Original report from Phnom Penh
26 March 2010

Hundreds of villagers stopped traffic on National Route 4 Friday as they continued a sustained demonstration in a land dispute with a powerful government official.

The 500 villagers are protesting a court decision to detain two men accused of burning the temporary offices of the Phnom Penh Sugar Company, which is owned by Cambodian People’s Party Senator Ly Yong Phat.

Villagers, who clashed with police twice as they demonstrated outside the provincial court this week, say the company has pushed them off their land and have demanded the court release their representatives, Yu Tho and Khim Rithy.

The demonstration moved to the highway Friday, blocking traffic for at least two hours, said Am Sam Ath, head of the investigation unit for the rights group Licadho.

“We blocked the road today because we want to pressure the provincial court to release two people,” said Luy Houch, a 42-year-old protester.

If he is a bad representative for Cambodian then you can vote him out of the office in the next election.!!!!!!!!
Can that be a solution ???????
I don't know the law in Cambodia, but in the US, in most city, the city Gov. has the right to take your properties for development whenever needed. The city will give you a fair offer for your property, but it is always the problem because for some people, they don't want to move. It happened many cases when the NFL or a Major league Base Ball teams need a new stadium.
It is not unusual that the Gov. purchase (or force you to leave from your home) your property for development. As far as fair value concern, it is just the matter of opinion because it is hard to put the price on sentimental value.

Here how CPP members are rich.
After 1991 Paris Peace treaty, CPP organised the following control.
1-CPP has borrowed URSS $US1 billions dollars and left about $US$ 450 millions. In 1991, they removed this amoung from National reserve bank into their political party fund. This fund was looked after by a various Businessmen such as Theng Bunma, Ly Yong Phat, Kok An, Sok Koung, now Kith Meng, Kong Triv , Yeay Phu etc...
2-All factories along National road No 5 and Norodom Bld were all registered under their business associated names such and belong to CPP.
3-All hotels, houses, small and big factories around the countries were all registered under the names of CPP members and put for sell one after one.
4-All National assets such as government buildings and lands were all registered as belonging to all CPP members.
5-Yeay Phu has about 1.5 millions ha of land.
Sok Kong, Kith meng, Ly Yong Phat etc.. take almost half of the land of the country.
6-Since 1998, Cambodia has borrowed billions of dollars for all their businessmen such as Yeay Phu, Kith Meng, Ly Yong Phat and other to invest all over the country.
7-All international aids since 1991, CPP has taken most of them as their own properties and divided them among their members.
8-They have divided forests between them to cut and pocketed them for themselves.
9-Now they divided lands for minerals, oil and others from underground among themselves.

Cambodia will be destroyed in a few years time.
If KHmer are not waking up, Khmer will have no land and will be the worst race in the planet.

    6:16 AM,

You have no clue of what happens in Cambodia when it comes to land grabbing. It does not work the way you see it in your USA.

Here people are robbed of their land under the name of development.

Injustice is everywhere and sometimes the only way to fight the injustice is to demonstrate. In fact, people in Cambodia don't even demonstrate enough for fear of violent represseion.

i don't think any rob them, it's just they want a piece of the pie. you know, in cambodia, historically, people want incentives, so when they see opportunity, villagers as well, they will flock to the site of the development and then request compensation, etc... hey, i understand how people operate in cambodia. it's the human greed, desparation, etc. so, it is ignorant o point finger at gov't or developer, really! it's the people, they want incentive or perks from the development, trust me! and of course, people will jumb to the chance if and when they can, really! hey, we're not that dumb or stupid to see this, you know!

You said that Khmer people cannot win the law? Are you living in Cambodia right now? Do you know what side the law is on? The law is on the side of the elite (to protect those elite), and the law is on the side of the people that have money. Money speak justic for the rich in Cambodia. For the poor, there is no law on their side. So what the poor have, they have sticks, stones, their pain, suffering, opression and anger as their weapon to defend these thief.

In addition, why are you so concern with pitty cream like this, this is nothing compare to thief of selling Cambodia and Cambodian people (prostition to in the name of development of tourism, work abroad, marriage with foreigners)....there problems is like cancer which is need to be taken care off...Khmer waik up...before the KR regime come back again...because it is easy to recruit the poor and training them to be a killers(well, just like some of Hun sen body gards right now - they could kill you for entertainment...). Hun Sen blin can see better than majority of you who have two eyes...and can't see a thing beyon your nose....

    Peace to all....
