Cambodian women need to be engaged in politics and prepare themselves to seek justice and freedom for other women, an opposition politician said Monday.
“We, women activists, or politicians, must dare to speak out to criticize political parties to get what we want, which is to free women from domestic violence and injustice, and [against] the denial of access to health service and poverty,” Mu Sochua, a lawmaker for the Sam Rainsy Party, said on “Hello VOA.”
Mu Sochua, who is also deputy secretary-general for the party, urged women to cast their votes for a party that prioritizes women’s health and education and is committed to fighting discrimination against women.
“We have a policy to, firstly, give women resources, knowledge, and money, and secondly, to ensure that they are on the first, second or third place of the candidate list,” Mu Sochua said.
A caller from Kampong Thom province, Sun Thon, suggested that emphasis be put on younger generations of women so that they can be prepared to be agents of change.
Mu Sochua also encouraged women to pay attention to issues around them by listening to the radio to follow the news and “clearly analyze it.”

ReplyDeleteBut you have to see that they majority still under poverty trap.
Many of that minority enslaved themselve into chasing for$$$$ for their social statuses.
Lack of education and understanding, require more political influences to achieve thi goal.
Combination of better tax reveues and their application, and also APPROPRIATE anti-corruption laws will allow cambodians earn a better standard of living. This will give them opportunity to engage in any social activities and politics.
It is achievable, but needs ambition of RGC and its committment.

While we are advocating for women to participating in political arena - first they needs to have the basic need; second, is women have to be able to provide enough food and security for her family. If these women do not meet these basic need first,one cannot expect the mother who suppose to support their children and call for to fight for their nation? Institution must be strenghten to accommodate women's need first. H.E. women who having a chance to work in the law making body - please make sure that women have protection from domestic violance from her husband, the in-law, as well as (the out-law). In addition, make sure the Khmer society have to take responsibility to take care their children. Don't let their children walk around the street to ask for food. Let the mother have the right to claim the assistance from the father of the child to support the child. This is not only to support through the institution, but also through Khmer attitude toward Khmer women as well.
ReplyDeleteStrenghten the institution and the rule of laws to support women in politice and as well as support the basic need of the majority of Khmer women population is the necessary but still not sufficient condition for women to enter into the political arena. Women need an education (as a tool for her to use)in order to compete with men (who are majority have education, and ready to use all mean to get the political post)....

Disgrace Mu Sochua’s problem all along, is that she is trying to be a politician. She's not, never has been and quite obviously, never will be. She should have just been herself, provide alternative policies and show Khmer people what a great alternative MP opposition she would be. Instead, her foray into being a politician has been a disaster. She comes across as pretending to be something she's not. Now, her political career is on the line and herself also in the hot water.
ReplyDeleteWhile the nation is facing complex economic, social and environmental issues disgrace Mu Sochua tried to promote her political stunt, aimed to get media attention. If this wasn’t such a clear demonstration of her selfish pursuit of personal ambition it would be laughable. There is no doubt that Mu Sochua has no real regard for the best interest of the nation. She is driven solely by a desire to become a “Champion of Women or new Aung San Suu Kyi” by any means available to her, even if that has the potential to destabilize the country. Even worse she is going to appeal her case against Prime Minister Hun Sen to the Supreme Court despite the Appeal Court upheld her conviction as the verdict which has issued by the Phnom Penh municipal Court.
People of integrity admit their faults, make amends and are judged fairly...Disgrace Mu Sochua is lacking in integrity and common sense and tries to change Cambodia into her own world. As long as Cambodia’s Court doesn’t issue any verdict which is fitted for her political stunt, she will scream for the justice all day long.

ReplyDeleteYou are right - this is part of the shows, but should we look at her and give some credit to her for bring Khmer women's issues to international awearness? or We can just look at her selfish side of using Khmer women, but on the other side, we can look at her as a vehical to bring Khmer women's issues to international attention!
There is no benefit to Khmer's wome
if Khmer women are not willing to pay the price (still some women need to use other women as a stepping stone to wherever they want, but as long as they are willing to pay the price). The Karmic price is not blind and just - have to believe in this...

who says fighting for women's rights is easy. throughout history, women had to fight for their rights all over the world, really. it takes a lot of work, commitment, and it's not done overnight; it will take a span of time to achieve such rights as a long term goal. god bless.
ReplyDeleteif it were easy, everybody could've done it, really! it takes personal commitment, perseverance and so forth, not to mention time as it's not going to be achieved overnight, really! it takes patience as well and education, networking with women from all over the world. can't just do it all by yourself, you know! and men who are compassionate toward this cause can all help to make a difference as well.
ReplyDeleteOK 8:42pm and 9:11pp - I agreed with the point you made. Women need education as a tool to use as the vehicle to bring where they want to go! And this is where govt. play a crucial role to give at least the basic education for all their citizen. In the 21th century, this very minimum requirement for the govt. responsibility to give it to their citizen. If this not meet, in the long-run, the govt. to manage a their illeterate citizen than is more difficult and would blaming them as a lazy person which incapable of doing the simple tast.

Education for all - it is the best way to give to their own citizen and garenty an accumulative return for the family, community and eventually for the nation. Govt., please give enough budget toward education - don't leave this to private sectors and foreigners to take care the education for your citizen!
