Cambodia dismisses US retaliation over Uighur deportations

Washington/Phnom Penh - The Cambodian government on Friday brushed off reports that the United States has suspended shipments of military vehicles.

The announcement by the US State Department on Thursday was in response to Phnom Penh's deportation in December of 20 Uighur asylum seekers to China. The Chinese Muslims had fled to Cambodia last year.

"It's no problem for Cambodia - no problem at all," Cambodian foreign affairs spokesman Koy Kuong said. "It is the right of the US government to donate or suspend its military aid."

Koy Kuong said Phnom Penh stood by earlier assertions that in deporting the Uighurs it was merely following its own immigration laws, adding he had not heard whether the US would take further punitive steps.

But he again denied the deportation was in any way connected to China's announcement, subsequent to the deportations, that it would provide Phnom Penh with 1.2 billion US dollars in grant aid.

Washington strongly objected to the deportations, saying Phnom Penh had failed to follow international asylum norms.

US State Department spokesman PJ Crowley said Thursday that Washington informed Cambodia on March 19 of its decision to suspend the delivery of trucks and trailers.

"As we said, there would be consequences for their failure to live up to their international obligations," Crowley said.

The US fears that the Uighurs would be subjected to abuse if returned to China, and has refused to repatriate Uighurs held at the Guantanamo Bay prison facility who were captured in Afghanistan.

Later this year Cambodia is to host thousands of soldiers from the United States and countries in the Association of South-East Asian Nations regional bloc as they take part in the US-led Global Peace Operations Initiative. The initiative is designed to improve the capability of peacekeeping operations.

if we have a real, and not mafia democratic government, we would have far more money than 1200 millions and it is a transparent money with dignity, even from China and US. China doesn't really happy with Hun Sen regime either but look down much on him and his ruling because china Communist party always changed and hanged and jailed corrupt minister and officers. hun Sen cheer them (corrupt minister and all) even more

Did HunSen ever expect such a lesson from from Uncle Sam? He thought he was smart enough to take advantage of both sides. Wrong, dead wrong. He has to eat crow this time.
Will Uncle Mao back up CPP to offend Uncle Sam? Of course, there's no doubt about it since the corrupt CPP always has an insatiable appetite for more and more greenbacks. The lure of filthy lucre is always welcome to CPP. The more, the better.

Screw the US hypocrisy! the US deport thousands of Mexican and other foreigners who enter the US illegally every day. They don't allow the UNCHR to interview or screen them for political refugee status!! Why make a big deal out of Cambodia deport 20 illegal immigrant from China!
Who care that they don't donate a few hundred old trucks! I bet China can match that or even double the number with brand new trucks. Watch and see.

That's just sour grapes, Mister. I'd appreciate it very much if you could answer my only one question.
How come hunsen never has the guts to deport all illegal yuon residents on Khmer soil and lets a sea of mainland chinese(chen dey kok)stay with an expired visa? THANKS

What is wrong with the US? If the US want to help Cambodia, the US should donate money to Cambodians and also allow many more students studing in the states as much as the Chineses. What is the millitary trucks used for? Defending against the Yuon and Siem? The US know well the Cambodia millitary beat up the victims of land grab and protesters. It is a shame for the US try the use Cambodia to counter the influence of China again as that in the 1960.

You're right. CPP's self-justification is totally useless. Cambodia must live up to the international obligations. That's all.

Who brought the 20 Chinese Uighur to Cambodia anyway? Thousands of Cambodians Americans were deported to Cambodia the last few years. Some of them don't even speak Khmer and know nothing about Cambodia. They served their terms in American jails, but it is not enough for them to be allowed to stay in the US. They were born elsewhere, may be in refugees Camps in Thailand or in the Philippines, but they were brought up in the US. Why the human rights are not applied in their case? Do they worth less than the Uighur Chinese?
It's rather political game, and Cambodia is only victim of that influence game between the US and China. Cambodia is friend to every one. But it is normal for Cambodia to think about her well being and her economic development first. The US should be fairer to Cambodia. This country has been punished enough for the last 40 years by World Super Power for their influences.

Yeah, Cambodia should demand billions of dollar from the US for live and property damages when the US drop millions ton of bomb on Cambodia during Vietnam war.

The way I see it, the US is so bad at diplomatic. They mishandle their diplomatic relation with Cambodia during Sihanouk regime and that led push king Sihanouk to join China. Now by punishing Cambodia for no good reason, the US is pushing Cambodia even closer and closer to China.

It is common sense, who is good and generous to us, we join them.

US doesn't need to provide trucks for the Cambodians military in which corrupt Cambodian generals most likely use for illegal logging activities out in the forests.

I can't beleive that nobody see it is comming. The US is on the Thais side. Thais Gov. is pressuring the US for this and they are listening to the Thais Gov.

cambodia is not interested in giving illegal uighur refugee status in cambodia because they enter cambodia illegally in the first place. they are not refugees, they are trying to get cambodia involve in USA/china disagreement. please stop using cambodia for political safe haven etc... they did this once already with sudanese political refugees, now they wanted to do the same with uighur. why they always want to get cambodia to involve in their political bickering between china and USA? cambodian people and gov't do not want to get involve in this because we have enough issues of our own already, ok! thank you.! yes, there are more to cambodia than you and i, you know! god bless my country.
