"My house was completely destroyed without warning from the company, demolished this morning."
Police and security guards for the Phnom Penh Sugar Co, Ltd, bulldozed one house in Kampong Speu province Monday, but a rights worker said he expects at least 20 more families to be pushed from their homes in coming days.

No one was injured in Monday morning’s demolition, which was part of an ongoing land dispute in Thpong district’s Omlieng commune. At least two local police and three security guards for the company accompanied the bulldozer, witnesses said.

“My house was completely destroyed without warning from the company, demolished this morning,” said Nut Sary, 35, a mother of two children whose husband is a motorcycle taxi driver in Phnom Penh. “I bought this land in 2000 and also have proper documents. The company said my house was illegal. The company has abused my rights for living.”

She told VOA Khmer she wants the company to pay compensation, but she did not say how much.

Chheang Kim Sun, a spokesman for the company, said Monday the house was not properly documented and was sitting on company land.

Phnom Penh Sugar is owned by Ly Yong Phat, a powerful senator for the Cambodian People’s Party. The company was granted nearly 8,000 hectares of land in a government concession in 2002, but in recent months it has expanded its plantations.

Villagers say the company moved onto their legal land and have staged numerous protests since February. At least two men were arrested in connection with protests that included the burning of several company buildings and a bulldozer.

Am Sam Ath, lead investigator for the rights group Licadho, said the company failed to announce the demolition to the family.

At least 20 families have told Licadho they expect their houses to be knocked down this week, he said.

Omlieng Commune Chief Hak Dam said she was not aware of the demolition but promised to investigate. Phnom Penh Sugar has in the past destroyed houses that lack legitimate paperwork, she said.

i see many people are praying in cambodia. that is good, however, it is like sitting still and do nothing, really. instead, why not get in connection with your representatives and come complain to the right authority. of course, you have to have prove of your lands title, etc... now, this land issue wasn't created by gov't; it was the legacy of the stupid KR era. so, hope authority and villagers alike understand this reality and sit down and negotiate and work it out together. after all, it is gov't responsibility and obligation to help settle national issues like this, not suppressing or worst use force or ignore them and expect them to go away like magic, you know. if gov't don't settle this, who can the people go to to get assistance to help settle problems once and for all? mabye, cambodia needs good leaders who committed and care about cambodia then country and our people. so far, if this kind of problem is being shove aside or ignored, the real vision or intention of gov't services and people are questionable. perhaps if the nation's tasks are too much a burden or too hard for incompetent leadership, maybe they ought to think about stepping down and let or allow somone else who are capable a chance to lead for reforms, etc... wake up, please! you are only hurting your own country and people this way. please do something about it once and for all, really!

    To the idiot 6:00am

The poor people is at a disadvantage. Do you understand?I'll cut you off before you starting bringing up the western country have poor people and rich taking advantage of them. You want to know the difference? We have a system in place called check an balance. There is many ways a person can do without being harm unlike in Cambodia you can go missing and the police wil say," oh that person ran away" when they just murdered the person the day before. Catch my drift idiot?
