The reality is that truth is a perfect defense, so if she could have shown that her statements towards the PM were true, she would have won.
Fortunately for her, the PM asked that Article 63 be changed to strictly a civil matter, and not criminal as it was before otherwise she would be in jail. She's lucky- she got publicity, got to tour and raise money for her appearances in the US, and didn't have to do her job in the National Assembly during her long absence. Having to pay the fine after being found guilty of a crime you have not committed also makes you a victim of injustice. In fact, this is the only choice most Khmer citizens are given.
You know full well you cannot get justice in Cambodia, so you accept the verdict and move on, but the injustice built into the system remains, and without basic institutional justice or legal protection for all, you wonder where the country is heading, and what exactly does it rest its hope on?
The country has been ruled by whom, and for how long, and what were the root causes of war and violence? Where is Cambodia now ranked economically, among the First World, Second, Third, Forth . . ?
Sometimes you pay the price for bucking the trend (and it may be a heavy price) but you do it nonetheless and regardless of the consequences of doing so, because at least you have shown others that there are alternatives and possibilities other than acquiescing to totalitarian norms.
In the final analysis, the issue is between Ms Mu and her conscience - no one else should stand in judgment of her at this juncture, beside lauding her courage and nerve in standing up to Goliath.
