Mu Sochua said US support for military units have been implicated in human rights abuses was "a huge insult to the people of Cambodia.""So I am extremely disappointed by President Obama for allowing this to happen in Cambodia," Mu Sochua said.

She also accused the US Department of Defense of lying to the US Congress when it said Cambodian military units had not been involved in human rights abuses.
Phnom Penh - A senior US diplomat defended military aid to Cambodia on Sunday, following criticism from a prominent opposition parliamentarian.

William Burns, US under secretary of state for political affairs, said military exercises in Cambodia involving troops from the US and 23 Asia-Pacific nations were part of efforts to improve regional humanitarian and peacekeeping capabilities.

"Any military relationship we conduct around the world is consistent with US law, and so we look very carefully and vet very carefully the participants," Burns said at a ceremony in Phnom Penh to return seven ancient Cambodian artefacts recovered from the US.

The two-week exercise that began July 12 is part of the 2010 Global Peace Operations Initiative, a US-run effort to train peacekeepers.

Burns spoke after opposition legislator Mu Sochua said US support for military units have been implicated in human rights abuses was "a huge insult to the people of Cambodia.""So I am extremely disappointed by President Obama for allowing this to happen in Cambodia," Mu Sochua said.

She also accused the US Department of Defense of lying to the US Congress when it said Cambodian military units had not been involved in human rights abuses.

Mu Sochua said the international community was repeatedly failing in its obligations to Cambodia. She called on donors, who pledged more than 1 billion dollars this year, to impose conditions such as respect for human rights.

what does peacekeeping training has anything to do with human rights abuse or whatever? let's not over do it! reform is more likely, her case is not human rights abuse, it's more of defamation case! i think the US defence is doing the right thing with cambodia as there are more to cambodia than ms mu sochua and her own biased view or politicized view which i can see why US no longer buy into nowadays. god bless my country cambodia.

let's agree to disagree for a change, ok!

Your are not a politician, young lady. May be you are too proud of your previous award. Please do not misleading Khmers. I support you in some issues, but not all.

As one of Khmers abroad, I sincerely thank President Obama and administration for respecting, building frienship and relationship with Cambodia.

It is great to have USA, China, and Russia to support Cambodia. I support PM Hun Sen to keep Cambodian foreign policy in neutral.

Please Ms. Sochua, revise your policy. Don't ran too fast.

Yim Sovann said it many times already. If Cambodia is moving in the right direction. If Cambodia prosper, have good relation with the west, have job for new students then the SR party is in trouble. So the SR party strategic plan is to continue to make trouble for Cambodia, and to make sure that Cambodia keep moving the wrong direction, being poor and corrupt so that they have more chance of winning the next election.

Now Mu Sochua really insults Cambodia and its people. What's wrong with this woman? Can she overcome her %@#* ?

She continues to use her bitterness against Mr. Hun Sen to weaken the country. This military exercise provides very valuable field experience to Cambodia armed forces, and positively rises Cambodia international profile, and strengthen the cooporation and relationship between Cambodia and other countries. Yet Mu Sochua does not care about all these, she only cares about her own personal hidden interests and how to hit back at Mr. Hun Sen at any cost.

I hope people in Kampot will never vote for her again.

The US is not like Cambodia whose ruler is an extremist in all win-win cases. Mrs Mu is also a citizen of the US, she has her right to criticize whatever act which makes her feel inappropriate for her government to do to other country. The US won't punish her, as Cambodia do, because the US is a government serving its people whereas Cambodia is a government maltreating its people for the benefit of a bunch of idiots.

As was said earlier, domestic social and political issues are not important as compared to global and regional politics.

Economically, politically, and militarily, the Khmers have a saying:"phnom mouiy men del meaan khla pi" The world is witnessing the rising of a second "khla" and will inevitably experience the power struggle between two "khla."

Hollywood photo stunts and social work issues will not be given the same spot light and attention. They are only good in some magazines or newspapers for a brief "feel good" moment.

i think the US is more interested in healing the wound and reestablished good relationship with cambodia than to blindly taken side with mu sochua with her personal lawsuit with hun sen. i'm sure the US is not ignorant in all of this, really! of course, there are more to cambodia than just mu sochua and other trouble makers. i guess it's ok to have these trouble makers as long as the world stop buy into them because sometimes, cambodia needs that encouragement, that strength, that something, etc to look forward to in order to reform our country and gov't. so, it's really a win-win situation for my country cambodia, despite all of this going on. god bless cambodia.

You don't understand what is a politician. A politician is a person who is active in party politics, or a person who holds a political office; and SRP is an opposition party politics, therefore Mu Sochua is a politician, a new leader, a replacement while Rainsy is absent.

What she criticized is right, because Cambodian military was used to confiscate land and shipped drug during Hok Lundy in power, and it may secretely still do.

Mu Sochua takes this good opportunity to criticize the US is the right thing to do. To remind the US that the Cambodian military was used to abuse the civilians and to confiscate land by the elite and powerful in CPP and more.

It is just a beginning of a new leader of SRP starts to protest to the oppressive actions of the Hun Sen regime and the political infighting between the CPP vs. SRP.

these political activists existed for the purpose of political pluralism in cambodia as cambodia can use all of them and to keep cambodia in check and balance, although in an unfavorable way. i mean a check and balance could be in another form that is better than having this political pluralism groups like reform in the judicial system by keeping it independent, etc... of course, there are better ways to run gov't in cambodia. but it will take time for the murky water to settle before someone from opposition stir it up again and again. i the important thing is to understand the whole scenerio in cambodia; yes, it's all political we know, really! please keep analyze cambodia political situation so we can share the knowledge with each other and the world for that matter. this is what makes the world goes around. but god always bless my country cambodia, despite all of this because god see the true and the reality there.

mu sochua, america has interest in cambodia; try to stop it won't help because even america have law that allows that with cambodia. thanks for your criticism, but not all your criticism is interesting, though! the US is not a baby, ok! god bless cambodia.

bless your heart for crying out loud, mu sochua! but it's not your decision to establish good relationship with cambodia, really! now we expect you and opposition to criticize america too and america will feel how cambodia endure your criticism as well. i don't think anyone can please you until your political group is winning the election. however, if you stay minority, i doubt if your party can win the national election, maybe your party needs to change your no good strategy, otherwise, it is unlikely to win majority in cambodia, really! of course, for a million times, there are more to cambodia than you and i, can't deny others of that rights, you know!
