OV school in Cambodia does its homework

VOV News (Hanoi)

Khmer-Vietnam Tan Tien school, run by the Vietnamese residents Association in Cambodia, held a conference on July 27 to review its activities in the 2009-2010 academic year and report on the preparations for the new school year, 2010-2011.

Principal Nguyen Van Be said despite the lack of teachers, the school has tried its best to ensure the children have enough classes. The school has also renewed new methods of teaching Vietnamese adopted by the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training.

In the recent academic year, 600 pupils gained good results and the number of outstanding pupils hovered around 55-65 percent.

In the forthcoming 2010-2011 school-year, the school will start to teach the Khmer language to help children communicate easily with local people and integrate quicker into society.

The school will liaise with Overseas Vietnamese businesses’ clubs to set up a fund in support of poor pupils.

Cambodia freedom fighter sentenced in fatal attacks

A Long Beach man convicted of orchestrating an attempted political coup in his native Cambodia that resulted in the deaths of at least six people was sentenced in federal court Tuesday to life in prison.

Yasith Chhun, former president of the Cambodia Freedom Fighters, was convicted in 2008 in connection with the Nov. 24, 2000, attacks in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh. Chhun's actions caused the deaths of at least a half a dozen people, including two innocent bystanders.

Chhun, wearing a green windbreaker under chains around his waist, addressed the court in a tearful speech in which he talked of his suffering under the Khmer Rouge genocide that took the life of his father.

"I am not lucky like Americans who are born in this country," he said. " I was, unfortunately, born in Cambodia."

He said that after coming to the U.S. as a refugee in 1982, he felt he could no longer stand by as his native country descended into political chaos. "I had to do something for that country," he said. "I've been punished because I failed, that I'm not good enough to overthrow that government."

Judge Dean D. Pregerson said he did not believe Chhun was an "evil human being," but that the prison term was the consequence of Chhun's actions.

"I do not want to be the person who does not say to all those groups that, if you conspire against the U.S., that the U.S. will tolerate or be lenient to you," Pregerson said.

Chhun, who was convicted in 2008 of the attacks in Cambodia, plotted the assaults from his Long Beach office, prosecutors said.

After the attempted coup, he returned to the United States, took credit for the attacks in the media and said he would do it again, according to prosecutors.

The U.S. attorney's office took jurisdiction of the case based on the belief that Chhun had violated several federal laws governing the commission of crimes in foreign nations.

Prosecutors said Chhun went to Cambodia in 1998 to meet with military personnel opposed to the ruling Cambodia People's Party, headed by Prime Minister Hun Sen. After the meeting, the Cambodian Freedom Fighters group was formed and Chhun was appointed president.

The military faction in Cambodia agreed that it would acquire weapons and that Chhun's group would be responsible for raising funds "for the violent overthrow of the Cambodian government," according to the U.S. attorney's office. A fund-raiser was held at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors presented documents at trial in which Chhun allegedly wrote that he would "tear Hun Sen" apart. In a presumed reference to other government officials, he allegedly wrote he planned to "cut their necks" and "send them to hell to soon,"

In fact, Chhun hid on the border of Cambodia and Thailand while about 200 members of his group carried out the assault with AK-47 rifles, grenades and rockets.

I think is something rather to be admired and learned from than derided.

Learn from it to see that if you as Khmer come together and form close nit communities to support each yourself - no one can bar you from doing these things. Because if you must know, even if Vietnam attempts to bars it, you as a group can lodge a complaint to the U.N for discrimination.

But to this point, have I seen Khmer tried yet? No Khmer in Cambodia has the time or desire or even know or accepted that Khmer existed inside Vietnam until very recently when the Khmer Kroms start crying out themselves.

Don't blame others for your own incompetence and disunity. It is your stupid leader Hun Sen that derides Khmer Krom who fights for their own protection, freedom, and right to self preservation. He calls these people as terrorist using Cambodia as a based. So how can you start anything when you are the one putting a block and capping your own people's desire to connect, learn, and survive?

Cambodia wake up. It is your leader, and you are complicit in destroying your own culture and people both within and outside of Cambodia such as Khmer Krom, by allowing Hun Sen and bad politicians to decide what you can do and who you can follow.

Grow up and grow some balls. Get your own voice, get out and do!

  12. Anonymous8:07 PM

7:03, it also means Khmers are unwilling to help Khmer people. If Khmer have the will to help, I am sure Vietnam will allow Khmer to open their own school as well, just as these Vietnamese association does in Cambodia, so too Cambodians can claim the same rights to humanitarian helping of their fellow Khmers in Vietnam.

What Vietnam need to do difference is only in giving more direct support and financial help to Khmer Krom because they are natives, indigenous, and exploited people by the government. Because of these people's land and resources, the government is rich now. So they should have obligation to help, but they have no right to block anybody else who wants to help outside of government.

Dear all Brothers and Sisters Khmer compatriots,
The outcome is that Yuon illegal immigrations will assimilate to Cambodians, but have youn mentality; they will work for youn’s benefit. Then, Cambodian nation will be disappeared at the end. The first evil person who created this problem is Sihanouk
Sihanouk is not a good king; he is the worse of the entire king in Khmer history. We should know that he got the Throne because of the French under the influence of the Vietnamese’s plans for swallowing Cambodia. Throughout his political action, he did every thing to support Vietnamese, who are the enemies of Cambodians, to achieve their goal. Sihanouk should not be counted as a king of Cambodia, but he can be named an evil of Cambodians. He is worse than Chey Chettha no. II because Chey Chettha no. II only gave some part of Cambodia to Vietnamese, but this king Sihanouk allowed Vietnamese to swallow the whole Cambodia through his conspiracy. He is a traitor of Cambodia. He should not be respected, but punished.
