Hun Sen invites foreign investors to help Cambodia develop power supply

November 27, 2006

Prime Minister Hun Sen in Phnom Penh on Monday invited foreign investors to develop Cambodia's hydro-electric power supply in order to help relieve the kingdom's pain over soaring prices of electricity.

"The price of electricity is too high in Cambodia because our electricity generation depends on gasoline and diesel," he said to over 1,000 students during the graduation ceremony at the Royal University of Law and Economy.

The government had urged foreign investors, especially those from China, to invest in the hydro-electric sector to allow the kingdom's electricity to sell at cheaper price, he said.

"I requested the Chinese Ambassador here to attract her country 's companies to invest in hydro-electric power generation in Cambodia," he said.

Water, roads, electricity and human resources development were currently the top priorities of the government, he added.

Electricity sells at 0.15 to 0.5 U.S. dollar per kilowatt in Cambodia.
