Defending Vietnam’s interests

Op-Ed By Khmerization
17th November, 2009

“By rationale, one would say that their action against Mr. Sam Rainsy constitutes treason as it is defending foreign interests against a defender of Cambodian interests.”

The ruling Cambodian People’s Party had chosen to defend Vietnam’s interests by persecuting a defender of Cambodia’s territorial integrity. The lifting of opposition leader Sam Rainsy’s parliamentary immunity yesterday is yet the latest attempt by the ruling CPP to silence a defender of Cambodia’s territorial integrity. But most importantly, the stripping of Mr. Rainsy’s immunity shows that the ruling party is subservient and defending and serving foreign interests rather than the interests of Cambodia.

Mr. Sam Rainsy’s act of leading villagers to uproot six wooden demarcation poles along the Khmer-Vietnamese borders on 25th October was done with the aim of defending Cambodian territories as the poles were illegally installed in the middle of Cambodian farmers’ rice-fields. His action was able to draw national and international attention to Cambodian border problems and had highlighted the seriousness of violations of Cambodian borders by Vietnam that had embarrassed the ruling CPP and Vietnam and had exposed border violations by Vietnam.

The lifting of Mr. Sam Rainsy immunity is an intimidation and another attempt by the ruling CPP and Prime Minister Hun Sen to silence, not just Mr. Sam Rainsy, but millions of defenders of Cambodia’s territorial integrity. Violations of Cambodian borders by Vietnam are real. It is not fiction, therefore the Cambodian government should address the issues by launching investigations into villagers’ and Mr. Rainsy’s claims of Vietnam’s violations rather than persecute him for defending Cambodia’s territories.

The lifting of his immunity is a diversion from other real problems by the ruling CPP to whitewash its inability to defend Cambodia’s territorial integrity or worst, its connivance with Vietnam to cede Cambodian territories to the latter. And to this effect, all Cambodians should ask whether the ruling CPP, and Prime Minister Hun Sen in particular, is serving Cambodian or defending Vietnam’s interests. By rationale, one would say that their action against Mr. Sam Rainsy constitutes treason as it is defending foreign interests against a defender of Cambodian national interests.

Yes, in Cambodia, those who defend Cambodian interests get accused of being a traitor while the real traitors got thrived and prospered in their corrupt rule.

Sam Rainsy was just trying to defend Khmer lands. He should be congratulated, not persecuted. Those who persecuted Rainsy are the real traitors.

You got it all wrong Khmerization. The problem is Sam Rainsy, not Hun Sen. As long as Sam Rainsy is the leader of opposition, Hun Sen will rule for ever. You can quote me for that!

Sam Rainsy’s leadership is too weak and uninspiring. He has not proved himself up to the challenges, and he is known to have made numerous tragic and costly mistakes. He could have made alliance with FUNCIPEC to counter CPP, yet he did the opposite with his 50+1 rule. He could take strong action to protest when Mu Sochua immunity was lifted, he didn’t do it… and the list goes on. Does he have any foreign country (USA, China, Russia or France ...etc) willing to BACK him and his party behind the closed door? The answer is no, and there is a good reason for that. Those countries don’t see him as a potential PM.

Folks, we can not save the country from yuons with candle light, bon takhen at pagoda …etc. We need a leader with a clear and decisive plan, and most important of all a leader who is not afraid to take bold measures. As the white guys say, we need a leader with balls. Over the last thirty years, Sam Rainsy has not shown any of those attributes.

If we want to unseat Hun Sen and free the country from yuons, the first thing to do is to get rid of Sam Rainsy. He is the bottle neck that blocks other nationalists to free the country from yuons.

cpp as the rest of khmer rouge, is only a yuon tool, not a government for khmer,

their Khmer patriotism is as fake as polpot khmer rouge patriotism. Polpot said loving khmer but killed khmer to be replaced by yuons and to serve yuon interest. These khmer rouge used fake khmer patriotism kill khmer and to bear khmer name while substance are yuons

    8.52 pm,

interesting observations, and perhaps the SRP does need new blood. But please, tell us, who are the alternatives? Who are these nationalists you spoke about? I saw a TV interview a few years ago in which someone in that interview said that Sam Rainsy is perhaps not the best man for the job, but HE IS the best of the lot at the moment. Meaning that yes he will make mistakes, but his mistakes will not cost Khmer land to disappear, for gigantic rubber companies to evict poor farmers off their family lands.

Hun Sen is still in power, not because of Sam Rainsy. Hun Sen is in power because he has manipulated the system, the people, to suit his will. He has kept the general population poor, hungry, and badly educated so that they cannot think for themselves. He gets 500 million UD dollars every year for the last decade at least. enough to send each and every child of his and of his friends to study overseas, yet not enough to get proper footwear for the soldiers defending Khmer borders. Not enough to even contribute to the cost of demarcation of the border, so that Cambodians have as much say in the border process as the Viets. Where is the pride in letting some one else paying for everything? They pay now, but they will take later.

So please, before "getting rid" of Sam Rainsy, show us the alternatives. Or perhaps you don't have any alternative available, and just want Sam Rainsy to go away so Hun Sen and his cronies acna carry on as usual?

6:03 AM, very good point. I think 8.52 pm wants to see the opposition collapse because he is a CPP supporter. Like you said, there is no alternative at the moment to Mr. Sam Rainsy. Also, Rainsy has come out the best and strongest of all opposition leaders in Cambodia despite threats to his life and attempted on his life many times.
