Abstract

Arguably, January 7, 1979 has been the most controversial date in Cambodian history for Cambodian politicians and civilians alike. To some, the date signifies the liberation of Cambodian people from the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime which had killed approximately 2 million people between 1975 and 1979. To others, however, the date marks the invasion of Vietnamese army into Cambodia, after which the country was to be under Vietnamese occupation for a whole decade before their final withdrawal in September 1989. This thesis joins this debate, but it does so by going beyond the simplified political rhetoric of "liberation" vs. "invasion," and exploring the complexities of Cambodian society under the Vietnamese-backed People’s Republic of Kampuchea (PRK). Chapter 1 of the thesis deals with the historiography of the PRK. Chapter 2 looks at the re-emergence of urban life, market economy, as well as social and political rights under the PRK. Chapter 3 examines the people’s lives in the rural areas, collectivization efforts by the PRK, military and labor conscription, and their impacts on Cambodian society during the 1980s, as well as their legacy for contemporary Cambodia.

January 7, 1979 cannot be celebrated as a liberation day in any excuse. But it is a final day that Vietnam has archieved its goal of Gradual Indochina federation in the near future. International relation term, Liberation can occur on basis of Humanitarian Intervention. Historical proof, humanitarian intervention never came up in the mind of Vietnam at any time. Ho Chi Minh had dreamed of Indochina federation since he created Indochina Communist Party in 1930. But his goal had faced a number of obstacles that prevented him to see a final victory over Indochina. At Geneva peace Conference 1954, the Vietnamese Communists were very disappointed to see their country and Laos devided, and lose the whole Cambodia. Khmer Vietminh delegation was not allowed to attend the conference and all Vietminh troops were ordered to leave Cambodia. Vietnam missed its first chance to control Cambodia. In the war with Gen. Lon Nol regime 1970s, Vietnam sent about 70,000 troops to fight the Khmer Republic Army. At this time, the stake was high; Hanoi asked Pol Pot to wait for them to liberate Saigon first, Phnom Penh and Vientiance later. But Pol Pot knew the Vietnamese communists so well since he came from Paris to join them at Office 100 at Thanhninh province. At the end of Paris Peace Accord between Vietnam and the US 1973, Pol Pot expeled most of Vietnamese troops and their civilian administrators from all liberated zones throughout Cambodia. Through the eyes of Hanoi, Pol Pot action costed them to loose the second chance to control Cambodia. In late 1978, Vietnam lose patience to live co-existing with Cambodia, as border clashes with Cambodia turned to be bloodbath and all Vietnamese civilians along the border lived in fear. At this Point, Hanoi said no third chance for Cambodia; Pol Pot must be gone. It was a good time, while pol Pot was busy to purge his camrades, army comanders, and cadres. It took Hanoi less than two weeks to take over Phnom Penh, much btter than expected. In this senario, Does Hanoi worry about mass killing in cambodia? If Pol Pot accepted Vietnam patronage as Hun Sen has done today, he would be on power until today; It does not matter how bad Pol Pot treated his people. Thus, January 7, is not a liberation day for Cambodian people, but the Final victory for Hanoi over Indochina and a day that Hochminh's dream became true, Indochina Federation.

From the continuation of history can we see this thing this way:

Just in mordern history after the end of Frech era the vietnamese had kidnap Cambodia Kids for future traine to controled Cambodia (Exemple: Pen Sovan)

In 1975 the Vietnamese Communist create Pol Pot and help Pol Pot take over Cambodia ( Vietnamese motherfucker is the creator of the killer monster Pol Pot)

After helped and doctrinated Pol Pot to Kill millions of Cambodia, motherfucker Vietnamese creat and invasion so they can get credit as a good guy and save the live of its spies (Hor NamHong, Kiet Chorn, and the liked)
