The USS Patriot, an Avenger-class countermeasures vessel from the 7th fleet based in Hawaii will make port in Cambodia's coast of Sihanoukville early next week, according to a statement released Friday by the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh.

The statement said the USS Patriot will begin a weeklong visit starting from Monday and to conduct exercises with the Cambodian Navy.

Sihanoukville province is located 230 kilometers southwest of Phnom Penh.

The bilateral training exercises will focus on damage control, search and seizure and at sea rescue techniques.

In addition, naval surveyors who are also traveling on the ship will assist their Cambodian counterparts in taking sides scan surveys of the port area to check for possible obstructions in commercial shipping lanes.

Both the bilateral training exercises and the survey are being orchestrated at the request of the Cambodian Navy and the Port Authority.

This is the fifth visit by a U.S. naval ship since the resumption of military to military engagement between the U.S. and Cambodia.

The statement said that "each visit represents another important step in this evolving relationship as well as an opportunity for military personnel from both countries to exchange experiences, tips and techniques which will assist them in the future."

    What those Americans want ?
    Intimidate China ?
Sell nuclear bombs to Taiwan is not enough ?
Ask Cambodians to borrow money from USA to fight against some contries for USA ?
In 1970, Americans came in Cambodia, Cambodia owe $300M to USA and lost 2000000 of Cambodians.
Please let Cambodians alone, if you don't do good to Cambodians, stay away.
Americans, if you are good, you love Cambodians, build bridges, roads, schools.
    Please, stop bring wars, weapons,
    Cambodians don't need that.

We can strongly smell oil thousands of miles away--and I'm here. However, during the Khmer Rouge era, We could not smell blood when the those innocents were massacred in Cambodia.

And why was Kosovo saved, and not Cambodia?

    President Obama,

I love America - its democracy, economy, culture and so on. That being said, please have some mercy, and don't step on Cambodia to get to China. Cambodia already suffered enough when you "supported" the coup in 1970 and then abandoned us in 1975.

    11:02 PM,
Your views are just your personal views and your expressions are out of hate for America. If you are a fair person you would blame China and Vietnam too for what happened in Cambodia. To prove your point, go around and ask your people about their views about America. I bet more of your people, rich or poor, love America and like to come and live in America. Currently, single Khmer overseas especially from America, are paid up $30,000 to $40,000 just to go there and marry Cambodian girls. Among this category of people, Hun Sen niece was one of them too. You twisted the stories all you want but your cannot convince your people to chance course about their dream: stay and live in America. If you don't believe my words go to visit all foreign embassies in Phnom Penh to find out for yourself which countries Cambodians are more likely to apply to come to live? Certainly not China, Russia, Haiti, Cuba, North Korea.

    11:44PM,

I'm 11:34PM. Like you, I am also Khmer-American, but I don't disagree with 11:02PM. Uncle Sam can do a lot for Cambodia such as forgiving the $300M dollars loan, helping Cambodia to protect its lands from the youn and siem thieves, building schools, libraries, roads etc.

Instead, uncle Sam is increasing leaning toward using Cambodia to contain China influence. That's not right! I love America but I don't want to see Cambodia get caught in the cross fire between super powers.

The siems may be up to something with their navy. That's why all of a sudden, a US countermeasure ship makes port in Sihanoukville to check out and keep an eye on things like Chevron's oil drilling ships/platforms in the Gulf of Cambodia. This is just a hunch.

Where was the US when Cambodia needed them?

    And why now?

Why saved Kosovo from being massacred and not Cambodia?

    Why now?

Seems like the United States are attempting to counter balance PR China's sphere of influence in the region by flexing their naval powers to show China that the Americans can dock on any port and be welcomed.

if you are Khmer American, you must love your country, USA, your people, Americans.
    Cambodians must not hate Americans.
BUT, Cambodians will be loosers by being by side of USA.
    USA is dying, economically..
USA cannot afford to help Cambodia, it's poor now..
Cambodia would be winner to be friend with China, that's future..

If the Americans is good (or great), why does the US still underpin the dictatorial policy?

Importantly, the US understands very well that Cambodia is the strategically important region that can no longer be ignored. Again, however, the Chinese is ahead of the game, and the US is playing catch-up.

How much does Mr. Obama (One Big Ass Mistake America)understand Cambodia? Does the Obama administration understand the Cambodia's 'past' and 'Pakistan' and 'Afghanistan present?

it is inevitable. the khmer saying of "phnom muiy men del mean klah pi" is at work here. it is great to envision a one-world government utopia, but the reality is that no one will ever trust the other person, and will always try to stay a step ahead.

there is something called a threat of "mutual destruction." however, who is to know if how much destruction can kill or make a nation.
