PM praises progress of women in politics

PRIME Minister Hun Sen praised what he described as the significant gains made by female politicians in a statement marking World Population Day, which was observed yesterday.

“The expression of women has steadily increased through politics,” Hun Sen said in Friday’s statement.

The premier encouraged all women to get involved in politics and social issues, and noted that he had previously called for the inclusion of women at all levels of government.

“I made the first-ever decision to order all cities and provinces to appoint a woman as deputy governor for cities, provinces, districts, villages and all state ministries and institutions,” Hun Sen said.

Lim Mony, head of the women’s section at the rights group Adhoc, acknowledged that the number of women in politics appeared to have risen in recent years. But she said many lack real power. “If women are promoted to the positions but they don’t have the right to make decisions, there is still gender inequality,” she said.

now the case with ms mu sochua is personal. one has to look into the very case itself. let's don't jump to a blind conclusion, here! the case with ms. mu sochua is more with defamation like libel, slandering and contempt of court, etc. it probably has nothing to do with women's rights, she's a woman, or whatever you want to call it, really! treat it as a case by case basis, ok! even ms. mu sochua, a parliament member must obey law of the land too, you know! that's all! don't try to mix a court case with national agenda, etc...! wake up people!

it's like when you're a member of congress, you have to respect law, too, you know! can't play too many roles like ms. mu sochua who is also a member of parliament and activist at the same time; got to separate the two or she could get herself in trouble with the law, you know! pick one or the other, can't have both, really! i'm sure we all heard of conflict of interest, not good for a law maker in cambodia or anywhere for that matter!

11:56 and 12:00 AM, you're monkey, you know nothing about law, in Cambodia, law means nothing, CPP members consider Hun Sen like their god, he's more important than their mother or their father, Hun Sen parole is law and Hun Sen law diplomas are just a piece of shit. Cambodian judges are a band of monkeys, they use Hun Sen will to judge.

    11:56 PM,
You're talking nonsense. That probably you have a lobster brain. In the first place, Hun Sen provoked the issue first. Ms. Mu Sochau was doing her campaign at the province. She criticized the Hun Sen government and that made Hun Sen upset and he then label her as Cheung Khlang. Didn’t Ms. Mu Sochau just do what Hun Sen appealed on his statement today? He wanted more women dare to talk out, dare to involve in the leadership and politic. I think you, the lobster brain and your man Hun Sen are the same. You guys just don’t know what you’re talking about. Worse than that, you guys have a short memory and didn’t know what you just talked about.

    3:55 AM,
You can at least read some English here, otherwise you would not comment on this topic. However, your judgment is very low, lower than an ordinary Khmer who can’t read and write Khmer, not to mention English. Everyone knew that, when Boros Khlang Hun Sen called Srey Cheung Khlang, everyone knew that who he referred to.

When did Mu Sochua come to represent all the women in Cambodia? Think again, idiots. Try as she might, she ain't nothing but another politician trying to make a name for herself by causing controversy but without concrete work, her 15 minutes will be up sooner or later.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO CALL A FEW MILLIONS KHMER TO RISE UP AND REMOVE HUN SEN FROM POWER. WAKE UP CAMBODIAN PEOPLE. IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A BETTER FUTURE, FREEDOM, DEMOCRACY, HUMAN RIGHTS, YOU MUST CALL ALL YOUR BROTHER, SISTER, COUSIN, ETC.. TO STAND UP. JUST ONE PERSON LIKE MRS. MU SOCHUA ALONE CAN'T DO IT.

This is an excellent example of irony - on the one hand patting himself on the back for promoting women in politics and on the other sending a message to all women in Cambodia that if they get into politics and follow their consciences, they could end up in prison or fined large amounts of money.

The law is the law they say, but they also say the law is an arse - particularly if those laws are used to remove one of the fundamental citizen's democratic rights: freedom of expression. A right the government is mandated to protect as part of the constitution of Cambodia. Thereby, the government has broken numerous laws and agreements while pursuing this case. It is understandable that someone would refuse to acknowledge the validity of the court's decision.
