Ranariddh in Paris Bidding 'Adieu' to Academia

Prince Norodom Ranariddh left Cambodia for France on Saturday to resign from his university teaching position in Aix-en-Provence, so that he can focus on his political career in Cambodia, a Norodom Ranariddh Party spokesman said Monday.

The prince will spend 10 days in France before returning to Phnom Penh, as he has to work as an exam proctor in his final duty at the university, NRP spokesman Muth Channtha said. Prince Ranariddh has already spent much of this year outside Cambodia.

The prince has been teaching law and political science at the university in Aix-en-Provence for 30 years.

Hang Puthea, director of the Neutral and Impartial Committee for Free Elections in Cambodia, welcomed Prince Ranariddh's retirement from French academia.

"It is a good commitment to show that the Prince doesn’t run from his supporters," he said.

Muth Channtha's announcement came the same day that the National Assembly voted to remove Funcinpec lawmaker You Hockry, who has sided with Prince Ranariddh, as its second deputy president.

You Hockry was replaced with Funcinpec senior minister Hong Sun Huot. Ninety-five out of 106 lawmakers present voted for You Hockry's removal.

Funcinpec spokesman Nouv Sovathero said the party called for You Hockry's removal because he didn't support Funcinpec's decision to remove Prince Ranariddh.

You Hockry remains a Funcinpec lawmaker, he said.

"He doesn't support the congress result but he has not done anything to oppose Funcinpec," Nouv Sovathero said.

You Hockry was reportedly outside the country Monday and could not immediately be reached for comment.

He has been teaching law and political science for 30 years in France, but he has shown little of such ability during his political career in Cambodia. He was an incompetent President of the National Assembly, and he made a mess of his political leadership with the deterioration of the Funcinpec popularity until he was eventually kicked out.

His main goal is not for the democratic development of Cambodia and the improvement of the living condition of its people. He just wants to acquire personal power and a lot of money. His face is not the kind to be trusted.

Your comment was quite true, he is a stupid animal. A leader with no responsibility for the wellbeing of its followers/people. He takes full responsibility for only women under his sexual slavery and its offsprings.
He is a real dickhead!

As a 'barang' with a Cambodian wife and being interested in Cambodian politics I have always wondered what Ranaridh teaches at that university. If men like him get teaching posts at that institution it certainly does not speak for that university. Political science and law by someone who doesn't know the fundamentals of normal morals? I must agree with a lot of bloggers on this site that the royal family must have some genetic deficiencies that make them bipolar and probably schizophrenic. Surely, the mercurial prince (Sihanouk for the un-initiated) is responsible for the plight of the Cambodian people by his vascillating actions following independence from France. Some of his children seem to follow in his foot-steps, including behavior, voice, and general bearing. They must finally realize that they do not descend from some higher being, whoever that may be. Simple people always adulate people with such claims. They are nothing but normal human beings, greedy one at that who don't see the well-being of "their" people as their first priority. They should all step aside and leave politics alone. No good can come from them. They all take advantage of the simple and old people who still believe the royal family is divine.

You are right, but the royal family hasn't helped the cause along one bit, quite the contrary, from a good beginning in 1992 and some development there is a regression now. Yes, no wonders can be expected overnight, but the people in power have squandered 10 valuable years in developing your country, and Ranaridh is one of them.
