Students’ Movement for Democracy

Statement

The Students' Movement for Democracy (SMD) is rejoicing on the recent change of political climate in Cambodia and the current move towards detente. Given the current political situation, SMD would like to take this opportunity to deeply thank the following people:

1- Border activists, information activists, human rights activists and a number of politicians who bravely endured the situation.
2- National and International communities who stepped in to help resolve the situation by putting pressure on the Royal Government of Cambodia,

And in particular to:

3- The Cambodian People who had the courage to continue to provide support, and
4- His Majesty the King of Cambodia who fulfilled his important role in providing the political stability and national unity.

In addition, SMD is also congratulating Prime Minister Hun Sen for his just-in-time revival, and his decision to abandon the dictatorship policy to adopt the respect of human rights and national reconciliation, and most of all, his recent decision to abolish the "defamation litigation law" which constituted a major obstacle in the practice of democracy in Cambodia. At the same time, SMD is sincerely hoping that Prime Minister Hun Sen will also cancel the illegal agreements and treaties concluded in 1979, 1982, 1983, and 1985, as well as the 2005 Supplemental Treaty which were all personally concluded by the Prime Minister, as these treaties and agreements caused the loss of Cambodian territories to the benefit of Vietnam, and they also constituted the means for allowing the immigration of million of illegal Vietnamese to come to settle in Cambodia.

SMD believe that this is the right occasion for Prime Minister Hun Sen to proclaim the cancellation of all the illegal treaties and agreements in order to set an exemplary governance model for the benefit of the nation. If the Prime Minister is not willing to cancel these treaties and agreements, he will be legally responsible in front of the nation's history one day, as Khmer people from both inside and outside of Cambodia believe that these agreements and treaties are detrimental to Cambodia's interest.
