Eleven illegal immigrants from Asia were arrested in the Western province in Papua New Guinea after police conducted a special raid over the Easter weekend.

Out of the 11, nine were from Thailand and two were from Cambodia, all of whom were arrested for illegally staying in Papua New Guinea without no visas or other documents.

Acting Southern region police commander Mark Kanawi said the police mobile squad from Port Moresby, which was in Daru made the arrests while conducting raids into inland Daru.

“Many foreign aliens are illegally living in our country and we must find them and throw them out,” Mr Kanawi said.

He said the 11 were not in police custody in Daru and would be sent back to their countries as soon as proper arrangements were made.

Mr Kanawi congratulated the policemen for a job well done and urged them to take the lead in removing illegal immigrants in PNG.

Information on what the illegal immigrants were doing in Daru and when they arrived in the country were not known as interviews were still conducted with medium of communication becoming a major problem.
